Who cares if some of the mail we deliver has not been directly asked for by the recipient ? Screwfix and companies like them pay Royal Mail postage to deliver their catalogues. Some of that revenue pays your wages. Are you really saying you want want RM to turn business
away during a recession ????
Reminds me of a BR employee who complained his job would be 'a lot easier if it weren't for all the passengers we have to deal with'

I'm assuming you are either a DOM or a future contestant for Britains Strongest Man.
I'd like to see how you would fare if you had to carry an extra 30-40kg extra in your pouch or even worse...on a bike.
You need to wake up and smell the coffee my friend.
Err, no, I'm afraid it's your olfactory sensors that need to get acquainted with the Nescafe.
Stand back from the debate for a second and imagine how it looks to someone outside the postal industry to see postmen complaining about the type or amount of mail they have to deliver. Is that not like a bricklayer complaining about all the bricks he has to handle in his job ?
Give him the right equipment, and his job can be made a lot less strenuous.
The issue of the weightier items having to be CARRIED is the real problem, not the weight of the individual items. It's exactly why Royal Mail needs to spend the 1.2billion loan it got from the government, on things such as those pram-like trolleys already in use in some areas, which mean the 'extra 30-40kg' is conveyed on wheels, not on the postmen's shoulders (often on a rickety old bike).
Changing times and a shift in the mix of catalogues / packets and letters require equipment designed for that type of mix. Hence the need for modernisation. The dispute is about how best to implement the changes that this business - and postmen's spinal cords - sorely need. Preferably with the CWU fully involved in all changes - such as the better delivery equipment described above.
Though there will doubtless still be numptys who will not use the trolleys, and jump in their car 'because it's quicker and easier for me to carry the stuff on my back, innit?'
