Technology isn't all it's cracked up to be, not if the human cost is not taken into consideration,

What "human cost"? What about the "human benefit" technology has given us?

Only the so-called communist countries believed in unnecessary job creation; great if you want to dig a cutting for a railway using only hand tools, but not a lot of use to a 21st century high-tech society.

Great. But how does mankind get by? I mean, what does mankind do in order to feed itself, provide shelter for itself, when mankind no longer has to work? Will mankind have to take what he wants, when once he earned what he wanted?
Nobody seems to give a thought as to how people will live, when work/working will largely be a thing of the past, and somebody had better start thinking about the consequences of a mankind made largely redundant, don't you think?

Probably not, but inventions etc can't be uninvented, and likewise technical progress can't be halted. :arrrghhh

But technical progress, just for the sake of progressing, is not really progress at all. Royal Mail is and probably always will, as with other large organisations, look for the best outcome and not plan for the worst.

Government is too short sighted to look into the long term implications and benefits of technological progress and it therefore appears surprised when things don't quite the way they were expecting. Just look at the NHS computer system.

What we need is some way of planning how to handle and implement progression both technical and non technical, beyond the next election but as there are no votes in it it'll never happen and we will be doomed to lurch from one progression to the next, leaving those unable or unwilling to adapt on the scrap heap - not a future I am looking forward to.

i have worked for royal mail under various goverments for the past 38 years and normally i would support labour every time but this new labour crowd have done us no favours in the past 10 years or so.
the big problem is that the tories will hammer us if they get in,we are one of the few big unions left and the media will wind the tories up to break up the strengh of the union and and the best parts of the business will be hived off.
i am in a dilemma for the next election i have voted for the scottish socialists in the local elections but will probably vote labour because they are the lesser of two big evils

What a strange thing to say. Many inventors or discoverers never realised the potential in what they'd made/discovered, and sometimes it took others and many years to make full use, so what your saying is that the human race may as well stop any further research etc done "just for the sake of it"? But how would anyone know the long-term benefits?

Funnily enough, there's a whole big wide world out there outside the UK and it's government, and they too, are progressing in the technical sense. To point to someone's cock-up (like this NHS system) as a reason or example of why "we" shouldn't progress, is absurd.

No and with a modicum of respect for others views you would know that.

There is no point in inventing things just for the sake of inventing them that is pointless and unproductive. To invent something you must first know what you want it to do, and therefore if you know the benefits its only responsible to make yourself aware of possible and predictable pitfalls and drawbacks .

Yes there is but I am not a meglomaniac - I can only affect - albiet in a very small way - what happens in my own corner of the world, other people sticking thier noses in where its not wanted got us into some of the problems we are in now. Pointing out the NHS system was not an argument against progression but an argument against not fully understanding the problems and consequences of that progression. But just as you have accused me, perhaps you dismiss my views because of who I am - not because they hold no validity.

BTW I am not against progression in anything perhaps you should read my post and try to understand it, as is evidenced by the last lines of my posts - the ones you did not quote. Progression is OK if it goes hand in hand with responsibility and as far as possible understanding all the consequnces, and the Government agree with me to some extent - otherwise they would not have enacted laws to try to stop cloning of humans.

Absolutley no point in continuining a debate when somone calls anothers opinions absurd more especially when they have not fully understood the opposing position.

Here we go again...............
There is no point in inventing things just for the sake of inventing them that is pointless and unproductive. To invent something you must first know what you want it to do, and therefore if you know the benefits its only responsible to make yourself aware of possible and predictable pitfalls and drawbacks .
Really? Volta saw his "animal electricity" as little more than a party trick, Baird thought his TV of little commercial use, and Gates thought that no-one would ever need more that 512K. What did they know, eh?
Yes there is but I am not a meglomaniac - I can only affect - albiet in a very small way - what happens in my own corner of the world, other people sticking thier noses in where its not wanted got us into some of the problems we are in now. But just as you have accused me, perhaps you dismiss my views because of who I am - not because they hold no validity.
I dismissed it as beside the point and therefore no example of the point you made. Just because one system doesn't work for whatever reason, are we then to dismiss all similar systems as pointless and/or worthless?
BTW why would I dismiss your views because of "who you are"? I don't even know you....
Absolutley no point in continuining a debate when somone calls anothers opinions absurd more especially when they have not fully understood the opposing position.
No, I understood just fine. However, as I didn't call your opinion "absurd", just the the point you were making, perhaps it's you who haven't fully understood? :hmmmm Unless you want to feel "insulted" in some way, that is... :hmmmm

If you put much credence in what Ray Kurzweil kurzweilai.net and others are saying then we'll reach the point of Singularity by around 2030. "The Singularity" being the point where machine intelligence catches up with human intelligence. What happens to non-enhanced human beings after that is anyones guess.
