PERFORMING OVERTIME DURING STRIKE ACTION
TO ALL CWU MEMBERS AND REPRESENTATIVES
Dear Colleagues
PERFORMING OVERTIME DURING STRIKE ACTION
We are increasingly aware that some members have been volunteering to perform overtime to deal with diverted mail due to the many localised strikes that have been ongoing over the last few weeks or so.
The Branch view is very clear on this matter.
Overtime is voluntary, however we would ask you to examine your own consciences before you handle such mail.
The localised disputes have had the effect of forcing Royal Mail to negotiate on all the issues in the National Dispute.
Their sacrifice is benefiting you. Indeed, their sacrifice may mean that no national strike action has to be taken as national agreements will be reached and existing agreements honoured.
We hope that you will decide not to benefit financially at the expense of others and that on these occasions you will decide not to volunteer for overtime.

Why is it Bollocks, All those who have taken action have lost pay, i haven't. So what justification is there for me to gain from their loss.

totally agree. in my office if people want to come in on a strike day/night thats up to them i dont have a problem with it.We all have commitments and you make a choice.Last night the shift manager was discreetly asking those who did come in if they would like to come in on sunday morning to help clear the backlog. The only time we get a sunday morn is at xmas. Now these people are earning off those who strike.Disgusting

Diverted mail is scab/blacklisted mail, the answer is there somewhere.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

To sum it up, CWU HQ are a complete sham.
They have chosen to suit their own agenda time and time again. This is no different.
Of course they dont want us to any o/t to clear the backlog. Only because they want maximum impact on the news at 10 that the strike is working.
It will make Dave, Billy & co look like legends as the driving force.
So they get some assistant to rattle of a few words on paper to further entice us loyal members to "do the right thing"
Good on 'em
Where were all the letters to branches regarding the following issues that could have been typed up just as easily?
Cars On Delivery
D2D's
Walk Absorbing..........etc................etc..............etc
Thats right! they never arrived because they were never dealt with.
The CWU need to remember that THEY WORK FOR US.
They cant even get the above issues straightened out even though they are absolutely crippling the job.
They seem to think that us posties who have been scrutinized and victimised because we do the job properly should have a conscience on their behalf all of a sudden??
I am sure that many of you will know about the ever on going d2d issue.
Hundreds of posties up and down the country are still being told to do them in "your own time"
Why havent they dealt with this owing to the official agreement?
Have you ever seen an ltb to members asking people not to come in early or not to use their cars??
Well, I aint.
I will be going on strike and doing my bit when the time comes, However I will not judge another member in another part of the country if my loss is their gain.
Nobody dictates to me when I can and cant work if the opportunity is there at a reasonable request. I expect no man or woman to do any different, but would insist that when it is their time to do what needs to be done, it happens.
The muppets at the top can preach from their ivory tower for as long as they want. I couldnt give a toss what those clowns think. The staff that are out all over the country have to be saluted because the strike IS working and its down to the union members. Not them.

Re: PERFORMING OVERTIME DURING STRIKE ACTION
Is this not what is wrong with the CWU as a movement right now. In the past there was a trade union prinicple that you didt do the work of those offices who are on strike in fact you didt touch any of their work unless they have agreed for you to perform this work.
However in this dispute some of our members have been on strike more than two weeks and i cant believe that some members of this union think now that we have Royal Mail on the ropes due the the backlog that some members who have not taken strike action believe it is right to handle our diversions on overtime. Well it is not. In fact there is no difference between crossing a picket line and doing our work on overtime as its one and the same.
Look London has supported milton keynes , Liverpool , Watford , Dartford and others before when they have been on strike action by not handling their work. Its is disgusting that some mail centres are performing extra shifts includuing overtime this weekend. That is not trade unionism. Is stabbing your fellow union member in the back who are fighting a national dispute which is your fight as well.

Re: PERFORMING OVERTIME DURING STRIKE ACTION
Oh,and for the record, you know that email/LTB HQ send out regarding when we strike, well they aint gonna send any more out now,you work it out.
TO: THE BRANCH SECRETARY
Dear Colleague,
Official Industrial Action : Date to be added
As a consequence of official Industrial Action taking place during the above period in a number of offices, Royal Mail have advised us that in order to restore a full service to its customers it may be necessary to divert work to other offices to clear backlogs caused by the Industrial Action.
It is important that picketing only takes place at or near the workplace where members have been balloted and not at any other office or location which may be being used during the period of Industrial Action.
Furthermore, any refusal by members who are not involved in the balloted Industrial Action to work as directed is, in fact, unlawful Industrial Action.
Branches are reminded that only properly balloted Industrial Action is legal and any refusal to co-operate with management over these changes may be deemed unofficial Industrial Action and therefore illegal. This, of course, applies to use of supplementary staff and levels of overtime to clear any backlogs. All such measures will be subject to normal consultative arrangements.
If any difficulties are incurred then Branches should contact the Operational Assistant Secretary.
Yours sincerely,
BILLY HAYES DAVE WARD
GENERAL SECRETARY DEPUTY GENERAL SECRETARY (P)

With You 100% Dingo
Being in a Union is meant to be about standing up for each other, through thick and thin for a common cause.
If all we a worried about now is lining our pockets with the proceeds of striking colleges lost wages then what hope is there when the sh%t really hits the fan.
These same people come out with every excuse they can think off to justify why they did this and why they did that, but in the end no matter what they say,
it all boils down to one thing.............SELFISHNESS
