Royal Mail has condemned the "irresponsible" decision of the Commuication Workers Union to ballot for a national strike action.

The ballot of the CWU's 130,000 Royal Mail workers will start on 16 September and will close on 30 September, during the Labour party conference.

Royal Mail said that calling for a national strike was "wholly irresponsible" as talks between the company and the union were still continuing.

The company said that since localised strikes began in June it had had 60 meetings with the union.

The CWU claims that it's continuous localised strikes have already severely disupted service, causing a backlog of nearly 22 million items.

However Royal Mail claimed the real size of the backlog was much smaller at four to five million items and would be soon cleared up.

The ongoing dispute has centred on plans to modernise the Royal Mail as the company has had to face up to a drop in mail volumes of 10 per cent per year.

Royal Mail claims all of its changes were agreed by the union in a 2007 deal. However the CWU claims that the company is pushing through changes without consulting or acting in the interests of its members.
