A NEW centre to give Royal Mail workers new learning opportunities has been officially unveiled.

John Park MSP, Scottish Shadow Minister for Economy and Skills, opened the Scottish Communications Workers Union Key 2 Learn Centre in Glasgow yesterday.

The Key 2 Learn Centre in Glasgow's Royal Mail Centre has been pioneered by the Communications Workers Union and Royal Mail.

It will give all 1100 Mail Centre employees access to lifelong learning opportunities in the workplace.

Since opening, half of the workforce has already signed up to use the centre or attend one of the courses available.

The centre can be accessed throughout the working day by all Royal Mail staff as well as being open for workers on the nightshift.

The Trade Union Education Department at Glasgow's Stow College is supporting CWU Learning Representatives to provide computer courses as well as a range of bespoke courses.

Mr Park said: "I am delighted to be able to support the CWU and Royal Mail's learning centre. Workplace learning projects like this are critical to ensuring Scotland's skills future.

"I know this new centre will benefit both the company and the workforce for years to come through improving training and development opportunities.

"I am certain this exciting and important project will make a real difference and I congratulate the CWU and Royal Mail Partnership on its hard work to bring this learning centre to Glasgow."

Trish Lavelle, CWU head of education, said: "Our union learning representatives have done a tremendous job and have worked tirelessly now for two years to open and establish this centre.

"They are a tremendous example of how the CWU is taking learning opportunities to our members."

Do they offer courses that lead to a route out of Royal Mail other than death?
