Not in any office. Operational needs may well be the excuse but unless they can demonstrate that these actions are applied equally and fairly to ALL in your office then it comes down to discrimination and victimisation . Ask for confirmation of equal treatment ,if no proof is provided ( ie. how many times have permanent duty holders been moved off their walks to accommodate a floater or reserve to work their day off on a walk of their choice) then bang in a grievance . PS you won't need to cos as soon as you mention it things will be sortedupmyroad wrote:Not in our office they can't. The person who's walk it is is on a day off and if he want's to do that walk then the rest-day cover must agree.celerycelery wrote:Unfortunately they can. Its called operational needs and managers use it all the time. It happens in our office all the time, they will ask the usual person to work there day off and move the cover person for that day. Afraid under the way forward agreement shite they can get away with it.upmyroad wrote:I take it your a rest-day cover duty-holder. If that's the case then NO you can't be knocked of YOUR duty if the other person come's in on his rest day. Stand your ground and tell them you are doing YOUR duty for that day.

Re: floater kicked off walk because duty holder working day off
I have come in on my day off and done a different walk from my own on a couple of occasions, its not something I particularly like to be honest but needs must. However if they wanted to put me on a nightmare duty I'd just say no, which is where the gaffer will back down, he needs bodies and the float is the easiest to move. Luckily my float is none existant so its rarely came up in my group.

Know how you all feel....my wife is a rural floater and when one of her walks regular posties was on A/L recently she was taken off that duty and put on another duty while a Reserve from another office replaced her on her designated duty for that day

Dead right. Approach the person by all means and show them other duties which are available which the cover person may prefer BUT after this if the cover person wishes to stay on his or her duty then the person coming in on overtime must be prepared to go on another duty.johnnyp wrote:Im glad to say this does not happen at our office and should NOT happen anywhere.Thats your duty,if these guys want to work there day off then they should be prepared to pick up whats going with out knocking off duty holders, its as simple as that.As suggested speak to your local rep,if no luck there get on to your area rep, good luck.

This is interesting. I did a 5 day cover for a couple of months whilst the guy was off sick and I got moved a few times at the last minute because one of the lads would only work his own duty on his day off. Now I'm doing the 5 day cover 'properly' i.e it's 'mine'. I now feel more confident to stand my ground...politely of course!

At the end of the day if the management don't back down then it may end up with you entering a Grievance on the grounds of the way you've been treated. Mention this to 98% of our office and they shrug their shoulders and walk off - just not botheredS6 Stroller wrote:This is interesting. Our office is run to suit all the ,,,flappers now ,ie people who come in early, and use cars etc.The few of us that are left because we do the job properly ,come in at our time etc ,are left all on our ownsome in the office at the end. A very very selfish place now ,our office and the management love it!,esp all the arguing and back stabbing amonst staff, takes away flack from them!

Re: floater kicked off walk because duty holder working day off
ok fair enough if you dont mind as a change is as good as a rest and all that,BUT it still aint right for any manager to pull rest day covers off there walks so that a man can pick his own up on docket97gaz wrote:Happens to me often. This morning in fact. Was put on a bitch of a duty. I really don't mind because I get bored of doing the usual beats day in day out. Change as good as and all that. DOM usually lets me throw in all morning if I haven't done one for a while. Oh and a couple of hours OT
My DOMs are usually ok and ask nicely so I don't mind too much but I do understand that they have to cover sick etc. The regular duty holders in my DO have mostly been on their own beats for years and wouldn't know where to start with a strange beat, whereas I find that most of the floaters still have the "knowledge".
It would also help IPS as i bet these guys who do the same walk all the time aint to cleaver on ips as they dont do any other walks.Reserves and rest day covers normally are good on ips as they do different walks most of the time.
