Industrial unrest at a Dundee mail delivery office continued today as disgruntled posties staged a sit-in for more than an hour (write David Clegg and Katie Smyth).
Around half the staff at the Dundee East office refused to resume normal duties for 70 minutes in protest at ongoing problems at the site.

One worker said morale at the office had dropped so low that some staff members were demanding an outside body was brought in to monitor the situation.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail insisted the action would only have a “very small” impact on deliveries in the city.

The latest protest came as the appeal of one postal worker at the site, whose dismissal last week caused 125 of his colleagues to stage wildcat strike action, got under way.

The Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “The appeal is being heard today. Half of the staff at Dundee East Delivery Office also staged a sit-in in the canteen for around 70 minutes this morning.

“All have now returned to work and are out on delivery.

“All Special Delivery Items will be delivered today, but there will be a very small impact on some deliveries in the DD4 area.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”

The Tele understands the sit-in was not directly related to the appeal, but to other issues of concern among staff.

One worker involved in the sit-in, who asked not to be named, said, “Workers walked out again for an hour today. The dispute is still rumbling on.

“The postmen believe they are being treated harshly.

“People got the feeling that if they didn’t go back to work, though, there would be more people being laid off.

“I have no doubt that there will be regrouping tomorrow and some form of action to get the management to bring the issue forward.

“We would like an outside body to come in and review our working conditions.”

Around 125 staff at the Dundee East office walked out in protest after a postie was summarily dismissed last Thursday in a manner they felt to be unfair.

They returned to work on Saturday when the date of his appeal hearing — which would normally not be set for around two months — was brought forward to today.

Willie Lawson, the Communication Workers' Union representative for the DD and PH postcode areas, said the outcome wouldn’t be known for at least a week

guy had 2 yr suspended dismissal, had a barney with a dom a while back, no witnesses.(he currently had 4 days to go til his 2 years was up- he had been attending 4 anger management classes, had done 3, and was given the bullet!)
Came back from holiday monday, day off tuesday, sacked tuesday by letter.

Two more posties have been suspended for the last 10 weeks or so also.Full pay, but no charges forthcomin!!!!

They are picking away at folk who stand up to them and those who do the job properly, its a concerted campaign of bullying , never seen before.

The reason we returned today was many part timers were not present at the meeting, drivers were out, and the big dom threatened to axe 4 or 5 more if we walked.

The trouble was, if some got their jackets and walked out, would EVERYONE follow?

If not, the first 4 or 5 would obviously be targetted for a bullying campaign by these who rule over us.

Tomoorow, the meeting will have taken place early doors, and when we walk, the part timers will see that everyone is out, and join us.

Its difficult right now, as we have a grassing bastard in there, who tells the dums everything, so some folk are quiet, but not i.

Morale is at an all time low at Dundee East, due to bullying management techniques.

As 'shimmyrule' states 2 colleages have been sacked in the last 2 weeks and everyone is sick fed up with it.

2 others are on 'temporary suspension', for over 10 WEEKS!
How, Why?

Everyone is scared to open their mouths and stand up to these bullies.
The 2 times we have taken 'unofficial action', there have been a list of consequences handed to us.
ie: threats of management getting their own back!
Such as, no overtime will be claimed to clear the backlog of mail; taking away our pick ups in the morning; further threats if we take any further action.

The union HQ should send a Rep to investigate our office and put these bullies in there place.
People are too scared to put in greivences against them for fear of reprisals and harassment.

The office lacks leadership from a strong CWU Rep.

My office has a strong CWU rep. but we're still hit hard by them, at the last dispute people weren't too sure (and therefore broke the strike) but this time people are so pissed off that they are actually joining those of us who where on the line the last time.

Surely management can see that their current attitude is causing more harm than good and that a happy workforce will achieve much more than an unhappy, downtrodden workforce.

"70 minutes" ... 20 minutes of this was break time ...therefor 50 minutes ACTUAL sit-in... yet RM docked 1 1/2 hours off pay.... Caring employer My Ar5e
