Royal Mail needs big sites to be profitable

NORA Cartlidge is way off base in her letter about sorting offices. If all, or the vast majority, of letters posted in Biddulph were going to addresses in Biddulph then she would have a valid point.

But obviously this is not the case. She is thinking of 80 to 100 years ago, long before the post became dominated by bulk mail, charity mail shots, subscriptions, catalogues, magazines, mail order deliveries and endless commercial junk mail.

Most of the mail from Biddulph, Alsager or anywhere else does not go to the place it was sent from, and it makes no economic sense to have sorting offices in small towns anymore.

The logistics of modern mail delivery means Royal Mail must cut these down and concentrate on large centres.

Obviously this is inconvenient to postal workers who are thereby forced to travel farther to work, but it is beneficial to Royal Mail.

It is not rocket science. It is a matter of logistics, and involves complicated analysis. The answer is more complex than the simple example Nora Cartlidge gives. Also, the "carbon footprint" does not enter into the figures. Royal Mail is concerned with profit, not the environment.

There was a time when you could post a letter at 7am in one town or village and it would arrive at noon the same day. No longer. In fact the time is approaching when the last collection from a given town will be earlier than the first delivery in that town.

But we now have a massive telecommunications system comprising mobile phones, faxes and the internet which we never had in times past.

So the telephone has just been invented? Did RM go bust when it was invented? Poppycock!

Privateers as bosses and psuedo competition are the cause of RM problems.

That may be true, but CD Allan's reply to Nora Cartlidge is mostly right too. Which bit is, err, "poppycock"?

Not really true. Everything has to evolve and RM is no exception. Modernisation on the scale required is only economical when certain scales of economy are met and small units whatever the discipline need to meet that criteria. One of the reasons for introducing vans will mean the demise of small delivery offices, that may be unfortunate for those offices but necessary for modernisation and use of manpower to take place. Look on the bright side, it will mean fewer managers.

Simple enough question I thought, but there you go. I guess there's nothing like some sparkling repartee to keep it interesting.....
