The danger of being a firefighter has been portrayed in a series of Royal Mail stamps due for release.

The six stamps are intended to show the range of situations faced by the UK's fire and rescue services.

The images include firefighters tackling flames, dealing with a flood and chemical incident, and rescuing people trapped in cars and buildings.

Royal Mail said the stamps recognised "the many different challenges faced by these brave men and women".

The stamps are also meant to pay tribute to the Auxiliary Fire service, the founding of which, 70 years ago, coincides with the release.

Fire safety issues are also featured - on the 90p stamp - to illustrate firefighters' work in the community, from school visits to detailed surveys of businesses.

The 62p stamp features the severe floods of 2007, which led to a massive rescue operation.

And the canine assistance often used in rescuing people from collapsed buildings graces the 81p stamp in the series, due for release on Tuesday.

Fire Minister Shahid Malik said the new postage stamps were a "great tribute" to everyone serving, whether as firefighters, in the control rooms, or in other capacities.

Julietta Edgar, Head of Special Stamps, Royal Mail said: "It's sometimes easy to forget that behind the familiar sight and sound of a fire engine is the serious business of saving lives."

The government's Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser Sir Ken Knight said the stamps were meant to show the kind of incidents being dealt with on a daily basis."

"[The] stamps show examples of not just the courageous actions of our people but also the highly sophisticated equipment used daily in a wide range of emergency situations.

"I hope these Fire and Rescue stamps will remind people to take fire safety seriously."

Stamps can be seen in a slideshow at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/8229425.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And where's the stamp showing a fireman asleep for several hours or drinking coffee waiting for a call to attend a trivial accident on the motorway ? No, there isn't one, these stamps just perpetuate the myth that firemen are brave and drag people out of burning buildinds ever day.
And when will Royal Mail issue a set of stamps portreying the dangers of being a postman - fighting off a fierce dog, struggling to cross a busy road, delivering for hours in torrential rain and lightning, avoiding the yobs in some sink estate, sliding all over the place in useless shoes on ice, etc. ?

Unbelievablely insensitive after the tragic death of a firefighter in Edinburgh just a few weeks ago.

but not as insensitive as ignoring the fact that more posties are killed and injured on duty each year than fire fighters and WE DON'T GET PAID AS MUCH and WORK EVERY MINUTE OF OUR SHIFT - WE DON'T SIT ON OUR ARSES WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

Are you sure?
I find that hard to believe.

You're right, that Firefighters spend a lot of time dealing with false alarms. But that's the fault of those who think it's funny to waste their time, when they should be available to help those who really need them.

But more importantly: They spend a lot of time, rescuing people who've been in RTAs, accidents at work, etc.. And of course, they put out a lot of fires too. And obviously rescue anyone who's trapped.

If we make a mistake, we get into trouble. If they make a mistake, people can die. There's a bit of a difference in the level of responsibility there, don't you agree? :hmmmm

Just because they don't spend all day every day, carrying people out of burning buildings. It doesn't mean that they don't have to put their lives on the line, whenever it's neccessary. And have to deal with the memories of those who didn't survive a fire, RTA, or whatever they were called to. :hmmmm
Don't knock Insanity
it's just another outlook on Reality!

Look at the statistics below for last year, even though the chart hasn't copied properly, and you will see 31 deaths in Agriculture, 34 deaths in Manufacturing, 57 deaths in Construction, etc. etc.
This just disproves the Daily Mail's regular bullshit, backed up by these Royal Mail stamps, that servicemen and firemen risk their lives everyday while the rest of us safely go to work each day without a care in the world.
Firemen I know say what a great job it is, one of them getting so much sleep at work he could set up a commercial brewery with a business partner in his spare time, and all this ahead of retireing long before us with a good pension.
Insensitive, my arse.

Firemen, soldiers etc. know full well any risks just as the know the pay, holidays and pensions when they apply for the job. It's entirely their choice.

I was merely stating a fact, and will agree that awards and medals should be for going beyond the call of duty not just for doing a particular job.
