A MAN has died and three others were in hospital with life threatening injuries after a car crash involving a Royal Mail lorry today.

The 26-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the B4057 at Stoke Gifford, Bristol.

Police said he was driving a black Mercedes which was in a crash with the lorry at about 2.30am.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said three passengers in the car, all men aged in their teens or early twenties, suffered serious injuries and were in hospital in a life threatening condition.

The spokesman said the 44-year-old driver of the lorry suffered a broken leg and minor injuries.

The road, which was closed for several hours, has now reopened.

A man has died and four others have been injured in a crash on the outskirts of Bradley Stoke on Saturday.

The smash, involving a Royal Mail lorry and a Mercedes, saw a 26-year-old driver killed.

The lorry driver suffered a broken leg and the car passengers were seriously hurt.

The passengers were taken to Frenchay Hospital while the lorry driver was transported to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Police closed the road near the junction with Old Gloucester Road at 2.20am when emergency services cut casualties from the car.

Officers say the road is still shut at 10.45am on Saturday as accident investigators examine the scene.

The 26-year-old driver of the car died at the scene of the accident at Bradley Stoke. A passenger aged 17 died later in hospital, police have confirmed.

Two other Mercedes passengers remain in a critical condition in Frenchay hospital, Bristol. The driver of the mail lorry was also seriously injured.

Two passengers in a car that collided with a Royal Mail lorry in Bristol, killing the car driver and a teenage passenger, remained in critical condition at Frenchay Hospital last night.

The injured pair, thought to be in their early 20s, were placed into a drug-induced coma by hospital staff and are being treated for head, chest and internal injuries.

They were travelling in a black Mercedes that collided with the lorry on the B4057 Winterbourne Road at the junction with the B4427 Old Gloucester road near Stoke Gifford at about 2.20am on Saturday.

The driver of the vehicle was named as Patrick O'Donohue, 26, a father-of-two who is believed to have lived at a travellers' site in Patchway.

The teenager who died was Jimmy Tyrer, 17, an amateur boxer and former Ridings High School pupil, who was studying at Filton College and lived in Winterbourne.

The 44-year-old lorry driver is being treated for a serious back injury.

A large group of travellers believed to be connected to the two surviving passengers have been camped out at Frenchay Hospital over the weekend.

Between 50 and 70 travellers parked their vehicles outside the entrance to the accident and emergency department, but have since moved on to a special car park set up for them by hospital staff.

Richard Cottle, a spokesman for North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Frenchay Hospital, said: "The sheer number of extra people on site did present us with a number of difficulties, particularly around access to clinical areas, keeping the corridors clear and with vehicles parked outside the entrance to the accident and emergency department.

"The travellers were extremely co-operative to our requests to move their vehicles and stay in one central location after we opened the orthopaedic outpatients waiting room for them.

"Yesterday we opened an additional parking area and they are waiting there in their vehicles rather than gathering in the main hospital corridor."

Also story goes that the travellers are now lobbing stones at any RM vechicles.As if it is his fault? The car ( possibly stolen? ) was doing about 80 MPH ( 40 MPH limit )and shot through red traffic lights at an accident black spot.

They can chuck all the stones they want at my van but I think all those in the area should take extra care to always keep to the security rules ie. keep all post locked in the back of the van and to always turn the van engine off, take the keys with you and lock the van .

Other than the fact that he had leg and back injuries. Does anyone know how the RM Driver is?
There doesn't seem to be anything specific. And judging by that photo. I assume he's in a bad way. I hope he's going to be ok.
