A SCHEME to let people claiming some benefits to report personal changes at their local post office has won the backing of users after a trial in Cardiff.

Some 43% of people claiming housing or council tax benefits said they used the service because it saved time and 30% said it was easier. Almost all were very satisfied or satisfied.

The four-month trial of the “Validate” service at the post offices at Albany Road, Roath, and Caerau Road, Ely, has been backed with a £50,000 grant.

The Assembly Government said: “The aim of the trial is to provide residents with an alternative, customer friendly way to report changes of circumstances to make sure they are being paid the correct level of benefit.”

The initiative is a joint project between the Post Office and Cardiff council.

Paul Garnham, Post Office Ltd’s government services manager, said: “These early results just go to show how convenient our network of post offices are and how much people trust them. People are able to keep their documents and not have to send them off; they know that their details have been correctly recorded in this free and confidential service.”
