CWU Leader Writes To Cabinet Members To End Postal Strike

The Communication Workers Union has launched a fresh offensive on central government after General secretary Billy Hayes wrote to every member of the Cabinet, urging the government to discuss the present postal dispute and forthcoming ballot for national strike action.

So far three MPs have responded, the Rt Hon. Harriet Harman MP QC, Rt Hon Bob Ainsworth MP and Rt Hon Peter Hain MP.

With both Royal Mail and central government refusing to renegotiate the 2007 pay & modernisation agreement, the CWU is now putting pressure on individual MPs as part of its existing "Keep the Post Public" campaign, to urge the government to intervene in the dispute and find a solution to the pension crisis and regulation.

Lord Mandelson last week made it clear that the government would not intervene and it was time that the CWU "Wake Up" to the realities faced by Royal Mail in terms of competition from rivals and digital communications.

Undaunted, the CWU is also urging union branches to organise parallel meetings on the issues it says are now faced by postal workers. The union says that employees face unrealistic pressures and forced changes without negotiation, which it says was promised as part of the 2007 agreement.

The Federation of Small Business today said that the dispute was having an adverse effect on small companies trying to get orders out on time and causing delays in the payment of invoices.

It's not so much "renegotiate" as implement what RM accepted as Phase 4. They've had the savings lets see the reward.
