Victorian postbox gets stamp of approval as oldest in Wales

WHEN a rusting metal lump was delivered to Haverfordwest museum, no-one realised that it would turn out to be a first-class example of a Victorian post box.

And the 1857 pillar box has the competition licked – it’s had the stamp of approval as the oldest postbox in Wales.

Museum curator, Simon Hancock, said: “The postbox was found in someone’s garden rusting away.

When the significance of its history was realised, it was sent off to Royal Mail, which restored it to its former glory.

“It was then given on loan to the museum where it has remained ever since.”
