Royal Mail urges workers to resist strike call

ROYAL Mail has urged postal workers to back efforts to safeguard the business rather than vote to go on strike.

Postal staff across Huddersfield are among thousands of workers to be balloted shortly by the Union of Communication Workers in an escalating row over jobs, pay and services.

But a Royal Mail spokeswoman said a strike would only hurt its customers and damage efforts to build a strong and sustainable future for the business.

She said: “As mail volumes fall we need to make changes and become more efficient. We are really feeling the effects of competition and regulation both locally and nationally.

“As a business we are operating in a market with many challenges.

“Volumes are declining overall and we face strong competition from other forms of communication such as email and text, as well as from other companies.

“Mail volumes are falling at a rate of 10% per annum with every 1% fall costing some £10m annually in lost revenue.

“We have to make changes to combat these challenges.”

The CWU has accused Royal Mail of cutting pay and jobs without agreement, in breach of a deal which ended a national strike two years ago.

Not the old 'weight' thing again.

Not so much the old 'weight thing', but more that it takes longer to prep the 'smaller' number of items. That is the point we have been trying to get across, if there is less mail, why does it take longer to prep? While I accept that mail volumes have fallen, I cannot accept that they have fallen 10% in the past year alone, that would be a noticeable amount even in DO's, but we have not seen it.

Ten percent year on year we can all see this is royalmails strategy every year they will come for 10% more every year and configure their computers for the results they expect!. We soon will be stopped for speeding by the police if we go down royalmails route!. Big bounses for feck all is the management mantra!. IT IS TIME WE MADE THEM ALL WORK LIKE WE DO!.

Ha love it. Same old Royalmailchat. If you don't agree, you're a manager. So much for credibility. Painful as it might be, I'm not. Just accept that not everyone sees it the same way, same as there won't get a 100% vote for strike action. Equally painful I'm sure.

Night tonic one minute you talk of incoming revenues--forgive me if I'm wrong, but are R/M not making vast profits? : According to their calculations, over the past few years we've had non-stop ten precent drops
in mail volumes-technically, we should now have nothing left to deliver! and we cannot ALL be mistaken about the amount of mail we take out. Most of us are quite rational and logical and can indeed work out wether or not our mail has increased or decreased.
I feel saddened that you have to use words such as "retards'-what a nice way to see your fellow workers. Have a nice day.
