More postal strikes planned in Notts

MORE industrial action is planned in Nottingham following a postal strike in the city yesterday.

A total of 46 workers took part in the strike at Huntingdon Street sorting office from 5.30am, affecting deliveries in the NG3 postcode, which includes Mapperley and St Ann's.

Yesterday, workers in the East Midlands Airport area returned a 'yes' vote for future strike action. This will involve between 80 and 90 delivery drivers taking industrial action.

The result for strike action in Grantham is expected on Monday.

Mick Caverner, divisional representative for the Communication Workers' Union, said: "The strike in Nottingham was well supported and successful. There will be further action taking place in the next couple of weeks but we don't have an exact date yet. We are also planning to take part in a national industrial action ballot in September."



The strike took place because of a row over changing working conditions.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The impact to customers of damaging industrial action is completely at odds with the CWU's repeated claim to support modernisation. We urge them to act accordingly and not to call our people out on strike action.

"As mail volumes fall we need to make changes and become more efficient.

"Volumes are declining overall and we face strong competition from other forms of communication such as e-mail and text, as well as from other companies.

"Industrial action will not modernise Royal Mail, it simply disrupts the service to which customers are entitled, will lead to an even greater loss of business and leaves Royal Mail far less able to protect full-time jobs."

Simon Edmonds, branch secretary for the Nottingham and District Communication Workers' Union, said: "This was part of a national dispute but certainly the staff are reacting to their treatment by management locally. We want to get Royal Mail around the negotiating table to get a national agreement on the new working demands."

Only 46 at one of my old offices...that's about half....Mick C is a bit optimistic saying this was well supported...it used to have a reputation as bieng a bit millitant too, mind you I am sure the rep there became a manager....another one!
