There's nothing like getting hammered for expressing an opinion. I realise now that emotions are high and that even a single word, let alone a phrase or sentence can be interpreted in many different ways.

I am no journalist and only put down my thoughts based on my own experience within RM at most levels and from a competitor point of view. Please note I no longer work in the industry and am only a customer looking in from the outside.

You're right that the postie will never be completely replaced. However, my point is this. Most of the fixed cost of RM is the frontline staff postie (forgot Adam's bonus for a second). Therefore if volumes have declined 10M a day (see RM report 2009) then the cost per item has risen. That means that you the postie is costing more to put on the street. The only way round this in my opinion in the longer term is to setup lots of communal letterboxes (individual ones) not where you have to sort your own mail, but don't give them ideas. This is the case in the US and in Europe, and it won't be long before this is on the table. This means less posties on the street. Something I bemoan from a socially cohensive point of view, but one I am also not willing to pay for (as is the case with most of the public).

As RD. This is not on the table at the moment. My point is to force the customer to either upscale to SD or downscale to 1st Class. RD's are a pain as they go through the regular system. This is an opinion and not propaganda from my point of view, but could see how it might be considered that.

Saturdays. My point is that in the US Saturdays are possibly going to be taken away. Personally I think they are a good idea, if only to advertise on the morning of a promotion and get people along. There is great debate regarding when it is best to advertise to someone as they will most likely buy something at the weekend. Do you get it to them on a Thursday, or Friday or even Saturday? No product at present provides that definity at a decent price.

Communal Letter Boxes? Impossible to implement. How do you get every household to opt for this?
Recorded Delivery removal? Would move more traffic to the competition as SD is very expensive for larger items. Disastrous idea. Why not make recorded delivery enter the system in the morning rather than uponn return and allow RM to sign for it and just deliver it?
I like saturdays. Shorter working day and we get to leave the office at 7:10am. Sometimes i wish we could go back to a 6 day week 5 till 11:30.
