Suspended sentences. In other words, they got off. Used to be that breaches of trust were dealt with severely, but not any more.

In a near-identical case in my MC a while back, the manager concerned was similarly let off by the court. He owed bookies thousands. And the old boy network at RM let him resign rather than sacking him outright. That way, he kept his pension.

Criminals escaping punishment is a big topic and it's just part of the way the whole country has become nastier in recent years, it's not just our neck of the woods.

It would seem that being in debt is a mitigating circumstance for stealing from customers at RM according to the bench that is.

So if you're stupid enough to get into debt that you can't afford then you deserve to be treated better in the eyes of the law.

I wonder what Ronnie Biggs would have got if he had been in front of the judges today? At least they were honest thieves then. What those managers did was despicable - using their position to cast doubt on the honesty of decent posties. It would be meet justice if there was a community punishment of a more direct kind :evil/mad

The judge accepted mitigating circumstances in passing a sentence which he suspended, where postal delivery staff have been charged it has often been the case where thousands of postal items have been secreted at the same time birthday money has been taken from some of the items and it may be the case that the delay of the post rather than monies stolen advises the tariff.
