Fair comment, but then again this would also fall under health and safety at work, so arguaby this should be their remit.

Having said that, if my experience of local and area health and safety reps is anything to go by, we would be wasting our time and money here as well.....

There are stories here that will never be told becuase you just wouldn't believe them!

I realise that (I've heard a few myself). But I'm very lucky, in that my Area Reps (and local ones too) are excellent. And surely there must be some other areas, who can say the same.

As Environmental issues are considered to be so newsworthy these days (personally I'm glad of that). A few good examples hitting the headlines, would hopefully kick-start a more concerted campaign nationally. Don't forget: RM have tried to play the Environmental card, many times. Remember these?

But wouldn't it be better. If we (the Union) were able to come up with a properly structured approach. Which could decimate the REAL Carbon Footprint of RM. By banning the use of private cars?
They're not all little runabouts. There's Jeeps, and Performance Cars, being used too.

As far as i know the status of envitromental reps/activity in the CWU is this,

CWU support enviromental reps and like other unions want them to be granted the same legal rights as Safety reps, which include release paid for by the employer not the union!!!

The Enviroment comes under Dave Joyce as his department if you all recall is called the Health,Safety and Enviroment Department and has been for a few years now.

Being involved in Enviromental issues is certainly nothing new for the CWU, they are simply increasing activity levels in this area which the recent and very first ever CWU and the Enviroment raising awarness course is part of.

The next step is for HQ to decide how enviromental issues are going to be looked after, do we create stand alone enviromental reps or add it on the existing safety rep role?

If stand alone then how do we structure them local area regional divisonal etc etc

To the best of my knowledge HQ have not decided those question's answer yet.

Also in the absence of paid leave rights how are the CWU going to progress enviomental activity? voluntay or unpaid union leave?

5. I have a laptop that will be returned to the CWU when the CWU see fit to honour my legitimate expense claims that are now unpaid for over a year. That is business, something you and your buddies know nothing about, except how to use members subscriptions on jollies to HQ and Alvescot.
6. So who released you to go on the Enviromental Reps course? More importantly, who paid for it?

I relate with what you are trying to say, the only reason why some reps or officals do nothing of value is because the IR reps are doing it all and they are not suppose to. It is up to the political officer, legal/medical officer, ULR, etc to promote their roles. I have seen reps not knowing what their remits are and some reps and officals are not even trained because they are not sent on courses, therefore they are just left in limbo, however, this is not the same within all branches and its about time there was more communciation between the different reps, instead of some reps thinking that they are more important than others.

I have had a lot of trouble getting release and I certainly havent told you I cant be bothered to attend meetings.


If you think that when a union meeting falls on Annual leave the rep officer should still attend then please by all means let us know that is your view and bring forth some arguments to support it.


Who released me for alvescot, lets see now Yep it was my DOM!!

Safety reps had their wages paid by RML/BT for the course that is the aggrement struck up between CWU and RML/BT.

Jollies to alvescot? Nothing jolly about being in a classroom enviroment between 9 am and 6pm its bloddy hard work when your used to a 6 hour day delivery postie job. But its worth it for the knowledge I gained which I will put to good use as and when enviromental reps come into existence in the CWU and Im fortunate enough to take on such a role.


As yet Ive not had the oppurtunity to show that my being on the course was worthwhile, why ? Because we havent got enviromental reps yet!!!! And yes im rather puzzled by that considering how long ago the course was announced and emails to the postal departmnet about how these reps will fit in the structure in terms of RML were met with dont know what your talking about.

Oh and Alvercsot is massivley cutting down its expenditure their electric bill has already dropped big time through the introduction of energy effiency measures, solar panels, on site allotment (which reduces food costs)!!!

Lets hope HQ follow suit!!!

Could everyone please now drop the subject of who does/does not attend BC meetings and why! No-one outside of Big Daz, and Wranglered's area. Knows who's right, and whos wrong. And as it was a serious accusation. This is NOT the place to be discussing it.

Both sides have given their side of the story, and this must be an end to it.

For the record this year there has been ocassions where my DOM has not released me for BC meetings. It got to the point where the branch secretary wrote to my DOM and the cluster manager asking them to follow the IR framework/ACAS guidelines and making it clear if they did not stop cancelling/refusing release then the matter would be taken to a tribunal.

At one point i was told I was not reconised even though the IR framework is blatantly clear that the structure of the CWU is a matter for the CWU and not RML.

Since then I have had release succesfully on two occasions, hoping to have a days CWU release next week to attend a case meeting with a mbr who was sacked under stage 3 sick leave and I will be submitting release form for a Branch committee meeting next month and one for a letter section meeting which willbe the first one since Dw visted as untill today I had not been the local rep due to not putting back in for the role.
