Stash of letters delivered eight months late

Post by Pat Ostman »

Christmas cards were delivered eight months late this week after a stash of withheld mail was discovered by Royal Mail.

Over the past couple of weeks customers in the North Hykeham area have been receiving cards and other post re-packaged by Royal Mail in a clear plastic envelope containing a letter of apology.

In some cases cards and letters have been opened.

The Echo understands the problem stemmed from a member of staff working out of the Firth Road sorting office.

And the letter states that "all appropriate action necessary" is being taken.

"I am sorry that the enclosed mail has been found in this condition after being withheld by a Royal Mail employee," delivery office manager Neil Dickinson wrote in his letter.

Several households in the area of Lincoln Road, North Hykeham, have been affected.

One resident said: "We have only just received a birthday card sent last December.

"It's been opened and the gift voucher which was supposed to be inside is missing.

"It's only £10 but the bigger issue is that someone has been tampering with our post which has been sent in good faith by Royal Mail."

Royal Mail were unable to say how many letters had been recovered or what areas had been affected.

A spokesman added: "Investigations are continuing."

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
