Postal workers to strike again

THE postal system throughout Peterborough is set to be thrown into disarray once more after a new round of widespread strikes were announced.
More than 200 workers walked out of the Royal Mail offices on Papyrus Road in Werrington, Peterborough from the evening of August 6 until the morning of August 10, disrupting mail deliveries in the PE1, PE3, PE4 and PE6 postcodes.

And now, the Communication Workers Union Eastern number five branch has announced there will be further strike action in response to “Royal Mail’s increasing attacks on its members’ terms and conditions” next week.

They claim Royal Mail’s new raft of proposals on business changes and the effect of earning potential and take home pay are “draconian and destructive”.

Royal Mail lorry drivers in the Peterborough area have also voted for action and will be joining their delivery colleagues on a walk-out.

This increase in action will affect the delivery and collection of mail throughout the PE postcode area.

More offices are also joining the action, including Huntingdon.

Area delivery representative Adam Oakes said: “Royal Mail is continuing to refuse to reach national agreements.

“They are now forcing the local postmen and women to take on extra work that they simply have not got time to complete within the duty times.

“Royal Mail continues to refuse to discuss in a reasonable manner and in line with national agreements, the workload of its staff.

“Instead, they prefer to bully and threaten members by attempting to stop their pay, an approach they have used in offices in the PE area including King’s Lynn, Peterborough and Skegness.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said their position still hadn’t changed and strikes only damaged the business.

He said: “The CWU is again saying one thing and doing another – publicly they say they want modernisation yet they write regularly to members saying union policy is to oppose change on the ground.

“The company has already condemned the CWU for striking locally over much-needed modernisation and change which has already been successfully implemented by our people in the majority of offices around the UK and is working well.

“Yet the union now wants strikes even in those offices which have already successfully completed the changes.”

He said these changes are all covered by the 2007 Agreement on Pay and Modernisation, which the CWU leadership signed in the presence of the TUC but they are now reneging on it in a way that “clearly hurts our customers and our people and damages Royal Mail.”

Why is it that Royal Mail's comments (or some dickhead behind a computer) make's me want to strike more?

It depends on your point of view. I know that sounds stupid. But there is so much ambiguity in the Agreement, that the same passages are being thought to mean two different things, depending on which side you're on. I've tried to discuss this with a Manager, and we couldn't even agree on the meaning of the Introduction. We had to agree to disagree, before we even got onto the specifics!

No its not true Brendan Barber the GS of the TUC has already come out and stated that Royal Mail should honour phase 4 which had been agreed and was critical of their pension stance and anti union behaviour .

How many times does management have to lie to you before you work out they might not work for the most trustworthy an upstandingly honest organisation?
We get a least one big whopper a week in our office,more when the area boss turns up You don't really believe the courier is an unbiased and balanced factually accurate production ,do you?
