Speeding postie drove at 97mph

A speeding postman caught travelling at 97 miles per hour has been spared from losing his licence at Derry Magistrate's Court.
Paul Anthony O’Neill, with an address at Great James’ Street, was clocked by police travelling 37 miles over the limit at Foreglen Road on September 26, 2007.

The court heard the 46-year-old had since been suspended by his employers for speeding in one of its vans.

O’Neill’s solicitor told the court: “He says it was a new car and, because of the newness, like any vehicle, can be quite speedy. He said he didn’t realise he was going so quickly. He was not deliberately driving at such a speed. It is a very good road. He said the conditions were dry and there were no other cars on the road.

“He was served with a summons and was suspended from driving by his employers.

“His licence is crucial to his employment.”

District Judge, Austin Kennedy, said: “It is a very, very bad speed and I will give you one final chance.” He gave O’Neill five penalty points and fined him £400.

He added: “If you come back you can expect the court to put you off the road.”

I thought all vans where limited to 70mph although TBH I've never been able to get them beyond 60mph (and that was on a motorway).

All our vans are but I would not like to be some of them trying to get over 40

Got my van upto 60mph no bother ...............and it goes even faster when I put it in 2nd gear

I thought all vans where limited to 70mph although TBH I've never been able to get them beyond 60mph (and that was on a motorway).

I think there was no limiter on the small vans two years ago, and it's a recent addition from royal mail ......

There are roads which don't have 70 limits, you know.

What amazes me, though. Is that they didn't prosecute him for dangerous driving, for not being in full control of the vehicle. He admitted it in Court: "He says it was a new car and, because of the newness, like any vehicle, can be quite speedy. He said he didn’t realise he was going so quickly. He was not deliberately driving at such a speed.". It's bad enough driving at such a dangerous speeds. But if he couldn't even control the car, then God help anyone who got in his way!

The fact that he's a repeat offender, proves that he couldn't care less about anyone's safety. The sooner he's caught again, and looses his license, the better. I'd rather he lost his job, than someone loose their life!

You'd be lucky to get up to 9.7 mph in London traffic, 97 mph would
only be possible in Distribution Managers dreams and wishes (though
they seem to think it is possible).
