Quick question regarding strike ballot...

Post by FellChair »

Since the last strike a lot of people at my office have left the union.

Will non CWU members get a vote in the upcoming strike ballot?

Thanks!

If you not in the union, than you simply can't vote, surely if you want to vote, wouldn't be easy to rejoin the union :hmmmm

Non union members can make their own minds up whether to strike or not thats how they vote on the issues.

With actual voting - The CWU is the recognised national body that represents their own members so RM deal directly with them. People are given the choice of joining them and having a say in the policies of the CWU, or not joining and having no effect.

If you decide not to join the CWU you are saying, as part of the consequences of your decision, you do not want them representing you therefore by default you are saying you accept whatever RM propose.

Would it be fair if CWU members who paid their subs, attended meetings and came to a decision only then to be voted down by people who by default have already accepted the opposing view. If you want a vote or a way to voice your opinion - join the Union its pretty cheap.

In the past 20 years or so you could have gone about your work quite easily without the union, only if you actually did something of misconduct would you of needed their backing. Over the past few years tho, I think CWU membership is invaluable as everything RM are trying to bring in now will really hurt the terms and conditions of the job. If you havent been a CWU member up till now then Id say now was a good time to join, youve saved yourself money over the years and now you get the same backing as everyone else instantly - its like buying insurance only when you need it.
I doubt the CWU would look kindly on it if you decided to leave soon afterwards and wanted to rejoin again the next time theres potential industrial action tho, but its good to know you have someone who has your back.

That's interesting.

So lets say at my office 75% are in the CWU and of those 40% vote yes, 30% vote no and 30% don't bother. A significant majority wouldn't have voted yes but the office would be out on strike.

Hardly seems fair does it?

APATHY AND IGNORANCE GO HAND IN HAND!. And how do you know who is in the CWU or not?.

Just through talking to colleagues you get to know these things. I wouldn’t say it’s apathy or ignorance if someone has left the CWU by choice.

Perhaps (God forbid) they’re happy in their job and don’t want to strike. Of course everyone knows that if a national strike is called you don’t cross picket lines and therefore are forced to strike against your will and without having voted for it.

On the grounds of fairness, couldn’t the ballot be done by an independent body to include everyone and therefore get a true representation of ALL who would be affected by strike action? That’s all I’m saying!

In smaller DOs you know who's in the CWU because they're the ones who normally say, "I'M NOT IN THE UNION COS THEY'RE CRAP!" This normally translates as: I took the piss tried to get the CWU to back me up and they told me I was taking the piss! There after they threw their teddies in the corner and cancelled their subscriptions. :Applause

For a laugh in the past I've told non-union members they don't qualify for the pay rise because it was negotiated and won by the CWU! :chuckle If you're not in the Union you don't get it! In a perfect world eh? Still the look on their faces was worth it.

Encourage your workmates to join up, in the end it's their only protection :evil/mad

Cheers :wave

You couldn't make this up,

So if i want to strike but the vote is no, should i be forced to work.Just be honest and admit you don't give a toss about anyone but yourself and are trying to find reasons not to go out in support of your colleges around the country who are being Shat on.

No one is going to prevent you crossing any picket line it's just a matter of concience just you ask your lino as he pulls your strings ? lets face it you have no right to vote and am i glad of that :Applause . it's a big shame your so downtroden and subserviant to your masters lil ad & co.

Apathy and ignorance it's certainly not....... there are other terms you can use but these aren't them
