The union are missing a trick by not running some kind of campaign aimed exclusively at part-timers. With the way the company is going, part-timers are the future, with smaller hour contracts becoming the norm. If they don't get these workers on side, they will lose any of the power they once had.
The FT to PT ratio in our office must be now about 70:30 and although that doesn't sound significant, any full time staff that leave, either through retirement or otherwise, is not being replaced by a full time contract. RM are using any excuse to get rid of full timers, because the part time worker, who has to bend over and take it when asked, is far more useful to them.
The issue of part time working is one the union should make a priority. They should abolish union fees for people on less than 30 hours a week, just to get their support because why the hell would someone on a 5 hour contract splash out a wedge of their weekly pay otherwise?

People willing to do the job properly ? ......thanks for putting a smile on my faceNot at all . Couldnt be further from the truth . To be honest .... in my office not one person objects to people using cars .
just this morning I took 3 guys out to do lapsing and took them back when finished . They couldnt be happier so in my eyes and theirs there is nothing wrong .

At dorset plodder. I completely understand where you are coming from. In some offices there are part-timers some days working about the same time as a full timers. I for one will work my contracted hours then go home. There is one part-timer that comes in before his time (comes in around 07:30, not meant to start till 08:15) preps his duty, goes out till god knows what time, thats because his duty is too big. Does not claim any overtime for going past his contracted hours...by doing this he his hoping to be full time in no time (wrong).
Over the course of 2 years our office has lost, 4 full timers, 2 part-timers, and have replaced them with 2 full-timers (shock) and the rest to 22.5hr contracts. I do see a trend appearing here that as time goes on, people retire, or leave the the job to go to a different one that there will be more part time staff than full timers.
To answer matt3c's question about what are we going to gain from all of this, is our pride and dignity towards our colleagues, supporting them and making sure that they are not going to get s*** on from above. No union, no fight, more grief from senior staff, do you want that? i think not!

A reduction in the working week without loss of pay will and can only help partime staff achive parity of sorts hourly rate they would gain and be closer to full time staff in terms of pay and hours worked!.
