Royal Mail bosses have been warned their service needs to be quicker, more high-tech and more reliable if the company is to avoid being abandoned by thousands of customers.
Parcel2Go.com, the largest online parcel delivery service in the UK, issued the warning following an increase in new customers who have switched to the service from Royal Mail.
Adams-Mercer, managing director of the company, put the majority of the defections down to Royal Mail's delivery system, which he claimed was too old and inefficient to meet customers' demands, and said the strikes were the last straw.
He added: "From what we are being told, people's faith in Royal Mail is failing because the process is too slow, unwieldy and inflexible to meet the needs of the modern customer.
"Sending parcels via the existing system simply takes too long compared to other couriers. Customers aren't able to have their letters or packages collected and they feel Royal Mail isn't competitive enough on price.
"Changes need to be made if Royal Mail is to stem the tide of defecting customers."
During the last major postal dispute in 2007, Parcel2Go.com more than doubled its turnover in a single month.
Mr Adams-Mercer indicated this year's unrest has added in the region of £50,000 per month to the company's income and suggested Royal Mail's competitors would continue to pick off trade unless it forced through its package of modernising initiatives.
He said: "I believe a strong Royal Mail is essential to the success of the parcel delivery sector because other firms are required to keep their costs competitive, giving customers as wide a choice as possible.
"To ensure Royal Mail remains truly viable, it needs to find a way of bringing the changes required into effect. Otherwise, it will see a continued drift of customers to ourselves and to other operators."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Parcels are normally delivered in 2/3 days (except when the managers decide that they don't want to pay to get them delivered) so I don't know how people want a better service
Anyway, don't these guys use people who use their own cars to deliver their parcels (I know HDN and TNT use people in private cars in my area), not very professional and a cheap method or delivery.

Re: Royal Mail bosses told to speed up the service
ordered some jeans on the net a year or 2 back.
the option said "royal mail recorded"
the numpties used a national courier so instead of waiting till late morning i had to stay in till 4 pm till the sods turned up.
id rather have paid the little extra to know at least when they were gonan turn up
if i wasnt in id have to drive to some bizzare outpost (trading estate) to pick up my package.
this isnt customer service

People say RM is no good for parcels, because they don't collect, but they never have done? Unless you arrange it as a business.
but what about Parcel Force, they collect stuff...RM for letters & packets, Parcel Force for larger items?? That's how it works

Re: Royal Mail bosses told to speed up the service
I used parcels2go to collect and deliver 2 parcels I sold on eBay and they were too heavy to send by RM. They were pretty good, if expensive, and they only broke one of them.
I thought, when I read the title that RM were being urged to get us on the streets earlier, now that would speed up the service.
