Thieves have caused substantial damage to a post office by driving a mechanical digger into the rear of the building during an overnight robbery.

Police say they received a report of the incident, which took place at Main Street in Saintfield, at 0330 BST on Monday.

The robbers removed a large safe and escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash.

The building next to the post office was also damaged in the raid.

There's a lot of those sort of robberies in Northern Ireland
- but I dare say there also are in Scotland, Wales and England.

Old DIGGERS :lfo & :cfo and ROBBERY god and here was me thinking my PENSION was safe in the POST OFFICE till it all went missing and a undisclosed DEFICIT was discovered!.
