A POSTMAN with 25 years’ service was sacked for leaving his van unlocked as he delivered a letter to a farmhouse on a single-lane track.

Peter Baker, 44, is the latest local Royal Mail employee to be dismissed for what they deem ‘trivial’ offences – such as failing to wear a cycle helmet.

Now, colleagues are braced for strike action following a crunch two hour union meeting on Wednesday.

Workers are set to be balloted in September as part of a national walk-out in protest at conditions, jobs and pay.

Mr Baker, a father of four from Southbank Road, was escorted off the premises for ‘gross misconduct’ – his first offence in a distinguished career.

He was seen delivering mail in rural Scarisbrick without turning off the engine and locking the vehicle.

He said: “Royal Mail’s investigation bureau said I had delivered to two addresses with the engine running, which is against rules and regulations.

“I knew that but in reality I was in the middle of nowhere, it was a single track leading to a farm. Nobody was around to steal anything, it was 100% safe. If it had been a busy road, of course I would have secured the van.

“I was just trying to do my job quickly – but I have paid the ultimate price.”

Postmen in Southport have accused bosses of making cuts ‘through the back door’ in a bid to make savings.

It is understood nine staff at the 200-strong Wight Moss Way delivery office have been sacked since Christmas. Three postmen were axed in May for not wearing compulsory helmets.

Mr Baker has the right to appeal against the decision but will contest an industrial tribunal if unsuccessful.

He added: “It is only conjecture that something could have happened. I am prepared to take this all the way to the appeals court.

“Nothing was stolen or pinched. I left the van unattended for about eight seconds.”

Peter has taken his case to Southport MP John Pugh in a bid to be reinstated.

He added: “I might have been careless but does that warrant losing your job?

“What I did was human nature. I was trying to do what the people want; to deliver post quickly. I'm gobsmacked.

“I have delivered post all my working life. I know nothing else.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We do not discuss individual personnel issues.”

Andy Tatchell, of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) which represents postal workers, held a meeting in Southport on Wednesday night to discuss strike action.

The union's executive will hold a national ballot of its 160,000 postal members, which could lead to strikes in the autumn.

Mr Tatchell said: “There are clearly problems at Southport but it is not in isolation.

“There are serious concerns at a national level about pay, jobs and working agreements which are manifesting in different ways at local level.”

Scarisbrick is flat typical West Lancashire mostly market gardening country or bigger farms - just fields ! - there's one busy main road from Ormskirk to Southport ( A570 ? ) , there's a back road via Heaton's Bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal & Bescar that joins up to the A570 , that's it !

Anyway who set the IB on him ? - was he a suspected tea leaf ? , was he dumping ? ; somehow I doubt it :no no :lfo :cfo :mfo

those sort of tactics are usually to soften up the union / staff for privatization , seen it done , just causes more resentment - he'd be quite a scalp for a AM , RM get their pension money back , plenty of box ticking brownie points :hmmmm

I do feel that if you leave the keys in and the engine running you're looking for trouble,if the van gets nicked then no sympathy from me,but this is really taking the piss, and i feel for the guy.

:sad:Sadly, he should have locked his door, but one wonders what the I.B.were doing there.Could be if he is in the habit of doing this, a customer may have complained. That does happen.

There have been rumours floating around that the IB are patrolling round various parts up here so it looks as though they are doing it all over.

only way to defeat the bastards is to cover your arse and do the Job right, don't give them any excuses, he shouldn't have left the engine running and unlocked, a warning would have been more appropriate as a Van with its contents haven't been stolen on this occasion.

Seems there is a major problem in Southport Office and the Media spotlight is now on it.

The sacked driver is absolutely right when he says he was in the middle of nowhere and there normally wouldn't be a soul around ( but this is :arrrghhh RM  ) . It's a weird village as it starts just after the outskirts of Ormskirk and doesn't really end until you get to the Southport boundary nearly 7 miles away . . There's no heart or centre to the village , everything that you'd expect in a village is all spread out .

That guy was staked out , I'm afraid I can't imagine any of the locals being bothered about RM vans or staff . What I have experienced though prior to Privatization , is manager's wives etc reporting things ; then someone gets the sack completely out of the blue or someone they're " looking for " that may be on the fiddle / drinking whatever has a trap laid for them . Seen someone get Open Prison and the sack . Broadly / vaguely like the IB sting with RM .

Seen a rep get the sack for going in a pub after a meeting though he wasn't on duty .

RM will hope for a culture of fear and yes , there's obviously a union bashing agenda .

Problem with that is that you will not be able to complete most days which means bullying and intimidation from your managers. This is a disgrace, all drivers have done this in a totally secluded area, surely it is possible to use some common sense. How many vans have been stolen in such circumstances? I can bet you that the answer is zero.
Then again we don't know the exact circumstances, I may look at the situation and say that I wouldn't have left it due to some reason or other.

They will just say the following. We have guidelines and rules that should be adhered to regarding health and safety and security.
The friggin problem is this, if we follow them all we cannot complete the work you want us to do!

Its all about common sense, its the only way.

I think I may print this off and post it on the notice board, as a warning to those drivers who think that it'll never happen to them

This sounds like some joker has been using a tracker, you know the ones they supposed to use to improve service and van use.

Was a tracker fitted to the van, if it was then I am sure that is well outside the rules. Apart from anything else when are these idiots going to start acting like managers, no other managers in the UK use thse sort of emthods any more. Ahappy workforce is a more productive workforce dickhead actions like this one only serves to strengthen the resolve to stand up and fight.
I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.

I'm not really sure it was the IB doing covert surveillance unless they'd been leant on from on high with this bullying culture & fearful and uneasy atmosphere . There would be some huge but very fragile egos ( usually means a bully ) after people going to their MP & media coverage , sounds vindictive ? :hmmmm

Wasn't there a alleged email from a senior manager offering to lend out camcorders for " covert surveillance " ? :hmmmm

NW postie is spot on about " give 'em nowt " , what you have to watch for is the " gossip queens " , the friendly and cosy relationships with reps , some managers don't necessarily have their ears to the ground but some staff do bend their ears :hmmmm afraid I've seen it all before and the culture went very paranoid and still is .

Classic divide and conquer .
