Britain's postal network will be plunged into chaos this weekend as 25,000 Royal Mail workers walk out over cuts.

Deliveries are likely to be worst affected in London, Scotland, East Anglia, the Midlands and south-west of England.

“Wildcat” actions could spread the disruption across other regions next week.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) blame “panic-driven” job and service cutbacks.

Dave Ward, the union’s deputy general secretary, said: “Postal workers are sick and tired of an incompetent management running their business into the ground.”

Recession-hit companies are bracing themselves for postal delays that could lose them millions in revenue.

Dr Helen Hill, policy director at the London Chamber of Commerce, said: “There has to be a swift resolution to this dispute.

“Businesses work to tight deadlines and rely on a regular postal service.”

Royal Mail chiefs insisted last night that the “vast majority” of services would operate normally.

A spokesman said: “The CWU’s real agenda is to block change and modernisation and oppose our goal of making Royal Mail a strong and innovative leader in the UK and international postal markets.

“Change has already been successfully implemented by our people in the majority of offices around the UK and is working well.”
