Frankly this post sickens me, yes I am a Manager and staff taking the piss just makes me angry.
When I see a post from one of the self-confessed 'urine-extractors', it's not hard to see why RM wanted to sweep away our right of appeal. Throw in a diktat to all frontline managers to issue Stage warnings regardless of individual circumstances, and it means a serial piss-taker's first and only opportunity to appeal is when it gets to an RTU, and then the WHOLE of their past absenteeism is revealed. When looking at their entire record, a clear pattern emerges and the RTU gets issued.
Unfortunately, the reason RM adopted this strategy is precisely BECAUSE of the minority of people like the original poster, who were / are treating paid sick leave like a form of extra holiday 'entitlement'. In order to try to catch them out, any of the rest of us who happen to get a genuine bad run of luck with our health can now find ourselves fast-tracked to Stage 3 without even the sniff of an appeal early on in the process![]()
We had a guy re-instated this year after his appeal came through, but he endured 6 months without pay and went through hell, where in the past, the Stage 1 that was issued unfairly would have been overturned much much earlier in the process and he would never have been sacked.
THAT is why I get so angry at the few idiots who treat sick leave as 'extra holiday'

my first day of sickness was monday just gone,im not intending to return till tuesday(bank holiday monday)if i ring up the manager on saturday saying im fit for work now! but obvisouly its sunday the followed by bank holiday monday, how many days will that count as being of sick?
Why are you sticking letters through letter boxes for a living?
Perhaps you are a geek with no friends who sits in his bedroom all night?
The OP has stated in previous posts that he has worked here for about 10 years, is based in Nottingham and started a period of sickness on 27th of April which lasted approx a week. That's probably enough to find him or narrow it down to 2 or 3 people at most. Given his claims (if true) it would probably be easy to determine who he is.
I'd advise everyone to be careful with how much information they reveal on here if they are going to make silly claims like that.
there was someone who got a dismissal letter after bragging about flagging his garden on Facebook - allegedly - Numpty Bumpty was right to give the gypsies warning .

Re: sick excuse?
re my highlight, this part annoys me, I was off sick first time for 5 years, only 1 week off, I was still issued a stage 1 even tho the rule book said, after 14 days or 4 absences, I tried to argue the toss, but since there was no appeal, the Stage 1 stuck and that pisses me off big time.Carnoustie wrote:When I first joined RM, we had the right of appeal if a Stage 1 or Stage 2 was issued unfairly. If it ever goes to stage 3 thats when I could appeal, but that is also the part where risk being sacked as well, its wrong the appeals process should be from the start.

Not defending the Guy, One thing I learned in my years in RM, is NEVER be forthcoming with information and never tell the truth, let them find out, you don't get prizes for telling the truth or the full story in RM, you get sacked for it.redman wrote:AOD's are discounted unless the accident was caused by obviously self fault accidents such as climbing a gate, fence & other total disregard of personal safety.
As for genuine illness, we as Managers are not permitted to give a personal opinion on someone's "illness", yes we have a real idea who has got pissed, the night before or who has been refused annual leave for one reason or another. As I have said all absences are deemed to be genuine and as no business could continually allow any members of staff ( Managers or front line) to take repeated sick leave with pay with no repercussions. The Thread starter is not alone un fortunately and I have no time for anyone taking the piss. I have been on a stage warning at least three times in my employment and all three times this followed a p[eriod in hospital, the latest a serious injury. I accepted it just as I accept I will continually issue warnings to staff that are unable to attend work for genuine reasons, because too many others play the system until such time they slip up with a " genuine" illness.
I recall interviewing one member of staff who told me in front of his union rep ( at Stage 3) "I really was ill the last time I was off,I may have had the odd skive previously but I was genuine this time" I could see the jaw drop on the CWU rep and yes I sacked him.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Regarding sick stage warnings, there is not a manager in the business that i could possibly have a 'good chat' with about it.

Bloke in our office thought he was smart, like you. Got a genuine bout of ill-health after milking 'the rules' for years, ended up getting a Stage 3 cos the genuine ones happened close together over a period of less than a year. When they looked at his TOTAL absence back-catalogue, they dismissed him at his RTU.
I still see him around town every now and then, invariably the worse for drink and looking like a tramp. Learn the lesson

Re: sick excuse?
Reading these postings reinforces the belief that I've had for years that many of our offices are staffed with postmen and managers who should really be working as doctors - given their professional expertise in all illnesses. Next time i'm ill i won't bother trying to get an appointment - I'll just nip into the manager's office and pick up a diagnosis, a prescription and a stage warning
