Today Postcomm launched a two month consultation on Royal Mail’s application for exceptions to its universal service obligations for the following:

Saturday 26 December 2009 (Boxing Day 2009) in the UK1;

the day following the Battle of the Boyne bank holiday in Northern Ireland; and

certain local holidays in Scotland (to be taken instead of official bank holidays in Scotland);

due to a bank holiday falling on a Saturday and the Secretary of State has appointed the following Monday as the official bank holiday in its place, the Saturday may be taken as a holiday and the Monday (official bank holiday) will be a normal working day.

If an exception is allowed for a day which is not an officially recognised bank holiday, it means that Royal Mail will not have to meet its universal service obligations to deliver or collect mail on that day.

The aim of this consultation is to seek views from postal users (senders and recipients) in the UK or parts of the UK that may be affected by no postal services on the holidays that Royal Mail plans to observe. So, for example, to consult on whether most customers (residential and business) in Scotland prefer a postal service on local holidays rather than on official bank holidays.

The Consultation is open for two months and will close on Wednesday 12 August 2009.

I see they haven't asked to swap Good Friday for the Saturday (or Easter Monday).

Are we off boxing day, Sat 26th?

I know this is normally the case - think Its just a mistake on my annual leave card.

It says boxing day 28/12/09

Yes i have never worked boxing day in all my years so take it as given you are off!.

Normally in my office if boxing day falls on a sat we would have to make up the hrs mon-thurs

Monday 28th is a public holiday. If you work that day you are entitled to money + day off. On Saturday 26th, if you've cleared on Chirstmas Eve, any fresh mail you have must have been processeded on Christmas day. Can't see RM coughing up for either of these myself. Hope everyone enjoys their 4 consecutive days off !
