Portishead and Nailsea posties to strike

POSTMEN in Portishead and Nailsea are among 900 Royal Mail staff striking on Saturday.

The simmering dispute between the Communications Workers' Union and the Royal Mail over pay, working conditions and job security will see workers at 15 depots in Bristol and Somerset take strike action.

It follows a one-day strike last month when 170 staff walked out at depots in Clevedon, Yatton and Bridgwater.

CWU Bristol & District branch secretary David Wilshire said: "Unfortunately we do need to strike to get our message across.

"Bristol is at the forefront of this latest strike action because as one of the biggest cities in the UK, it is an area Royal Mail is looking at closely and where it will implement changes without agreement.

"The 'yes' vote to strike in Bristol was 70.6 per cent and that shows the strength of feeling here."

The other depots on strike are at Yate, Keynsham, Kingswood, Avonmouth, Fishponds, Westbury on Trym, Clifton, South Bristol, South East Bristol, City depot, Bridgwater, Axbridge and Woolavington.

The CWU added that additional meetings will be taking place outside the Bristol Mail Centre site at Filton and the distribution depot at Pilning over the next two days to agree dates for strike action at these units.

The strike action has been slammed by the Royal Mail.

Spokesman Jaquie Stenson said: "Having met the union more than 50 times in recent months, it is increasingly clear the CWU refuses to believe mail volumes are declining despite the clear evidence of this in the UK and in every other postal market around the world.

"We again condemn the CWU for striking locally over much-needed modernisation and change which has already been successfully implemented by our people in the majority of offices around the UK and is working well."

Post Offices are not involved in the dispute and will be open as normal.
