Royal Mail strike in Bristol this weekend

About 900 Royal Mail workers in the Bristol area are planning to go on strike this weekend in a row over pay.

Fifteen Royal Mail delivery depots across the Bristol area are set to strike on Saturday in a dispute over pay terms, conditions, job security and cuts to the service.

The depots on strike will be at Yate; Keynsham, Portishead; Kingswood; Nailsea; Avonmouth; Fishponds; Westbury-on-Trym; Clifton; South Bristol; South East Bristol; City depot; Bridgwater; Axbridge and Woolavington.

Following votes to strike, there will be meetings outside the Bristol Mail Centre site at Filton and the distribution depot at Pilning before the end of the week to agree dates for strikes at those sites too.

Workers at the Royal Mail processing centres at Filton and Severn Beach backed strikes with 70 per cent voting in favour.

The latest action follows a strike at two depots in Bristol last month.

Staff at the Royal Mail depots in Montpelier and Whitehall protested over proposed job cuts, affecting mail deliveries in the BS5, BS6 and BS7 postcode areas.

The 170 workers, 70 at Whitehall and 100 at Montpelier, joined colleagues across the UK striking.

CWU Bristol & District branch secretary David Wilshire said: "Unfortunately we do need to strike to get our message across.

"Bristol is at the forefront of this latest strike action because as one of the biggest cities in the UK, it is an area Royal Mail is looking at closely and where it will implement changes without agreement.

"The 'yes' vote to strike in Bristol was 70.6 per cent and that shows the strength of feeling here."

Deliveries to customers in the following postcode sectors are expected to be disrupted if the strike on Saturday goes ahead: BS1, 3, 4, 8-11, 13-16, 20, 26, 31, 37,41 and 48.

Royal Mail spokesman Jaquie Stenson said: "Having met the union more than 50 times in recent months, it is increasingly clear the CWU refuses to believe mail volumes are declining despite the clear evidence of this in the UK and in every other postal market around the world.

"We again condemn the CWU for striking locally over much-needed modernisation and change which has already been successfully implemented by our people in the majority of offices around the UK and is working well."

What modernisation? None in my office...no pegusus, electric trollies, PDAs for deliveries, walk sequencing or anything near it. Just cuts cuts cuts...
