Ready Reckoners on our frames

Our DOM put a ready reckoner on everyone's frames some time last year, and I have some questions!

Now, I did a search on ready reckoner's but it seems there's not much comment about them, so for those who don't know... These are designed to tell us how long it should take us to complete our prep and how long to tie up, depending on the amount of traffic coming into the office. Each duty's ready reckoner has a percentage figure which states what percentage of mail your duty receives into the office.

Now what I want to know is... Are these in every office? Are they recognised by the CWU? (I've been told they are not recognised but they are still on our frames!). If not recognised by the union, what can I say to the management when they keep harping on about it?

The management love to quote the ready reckoner times to put pressure on us in the morning, and to measure our speed. But to be honest I do not know how anyone can achieve the times set out in the reckoner? They are ridiculous, and I and several others have told the managers as much.

I came back from delivery today to see an updated ready reckoner on my frame. Unbelievably it is now telling me that the percentage of mail I handle in the office has dropped by 0.1%. WTF? They seemed to have dropped everyone's. I have already pointed out to my manager that despite the mail dropping, the percentage of mail the duties would handle in the office, should still be the same. ( I did get a quiet acknowledgement that I may well be right, but then my comments were ignored / discarded!!! )

I expect tomorrow to be another bitching session, so would appreciate finding out if anyone else is going through this shite.

Last time that I heard of a ready reckoner was in Primary 3 at school and that was 40+ years ago.

Apparently RM have a computer program that allows the DOM to tell how much mail each walk has, it can get this information with minutes as opposed to the old system which could take days, from what i can work out though i may have the wrong end of the stick, from taking samples of mail volumes at certain times through the year it can workout how much mail each walk has on a given day, and how long it should take to prep and deliver, they will use this data to equalise the walks, to which the reply from the staff was we thought Pegasus did that, well this programs better replied the DOM. For a couple of days the DOM walked round telling people how long their duties will take.I believe the answer from the staff was "it takes as long as it takes." ain't seen him wondering around with his bit of paper since. I can only assume that they will keep buying these crap programs till the find one that gives them the answer they want.

Heard today that management in the anglia region are now introducing these proformas and that has caused numerous problems with absorbtion.

Senior Management in London have broken a promise which they only gave last week on absorbition when they swore they would not be taking postmen and women off their walks in order to create absorbtion. They have now informed us that anyone who`s walk is near to the office will be taken off their walk regardless of their seniority in order for that walk to become the duty or duties which others absorb.

I believe it's a NI thing (one particular DSM seems to have his offices put them out), I've had them on my frames and TBH they where really unworkable (18 letters per minute and between 10 and 15 minutes to tie up a frame, no matter how big or complicated the frame is) but these seem to have been dropped in favour of a new system, a sheet posted on a notice board, detailing every duty and how long it should take to prep and tie up and you'll all love this one......................it now has the prep speed of 25 letters per minute, every minute until you're done (I can see lots of legal action in the future with serious RSI claims), so even the heaviest duty can now be prepped in an hour and 15 minutes to tie up

Heard of a similar program during revisions, what it does is measures the mech mail for each duty and from this you can apply it to the office traffic to give a duty a percentage. RM say that mech usually mirrors manual though personally I think there are far too many variables in it to give an accurate figure, I have asked for the formula how the calculation is made but was never furnished with it. So to me it's a facts and figures can be used to prove anything especially in RM.
