It's not us, that I'm worried about.

Post by andy2007 »

I know it's a joke. I think it's in bad taste. But it's still obviously a joke.

But the problem is, that the people who're getting really depressed about conditions at work, won't see it as a joke. I've suffered from depression in the past, myself. And you don't see the World in quite the same way as someone who isn't depressed. There's a very real possibility, that they could take you seriously, and get very upset by it.

I've no problem with "dark humour" generally. But when we're discussing what people should do, when they're in such a bad state. It could backfire dramatically. I'm not saying this to have a go at you. But to let you know why it's so much of a problem in this particular thread. It's not something that I would expect people to realise, unless theyve suffered from depression themselves. Or cared for someone else, who has.

I sit here wondering wether i'll get the manager on my case to take out extra work when there are people paid til 5 coming back at 3:30-4pm. I don't want the overtime and I don't want statutory allowance beacuse i'm happy finishing at 3:30pm but my manager thinks otherwise. I wonder why it is okay for some people who do work overtime to book til 5pm even though they are finishig at around the same time as me when last week we were told RM were coming down on people booking excess overtime. I wonder if any of the managers at my depot have any previous experience or even any managerial qualifications. I don't bother asking the managers at our depot anything anymore because I know the answer I get will be "i'll get back to you" and I know they won't. I have started drinking more that I used to, I am more tired than I used to be. I work for Parcelforce btw. Sunday night is the worst, I hate it. I'm sitting here now thinking about phoning in sick tomorrow because I can't believe it's only midweek and i've just had enough. I was never like this at my previous place of work. Royal Mail sort you selves out.
I think what you really need to do is to go see your GP,what you have is a class 1 case of depression,we all know how tough it can be the desprate feeling that you stand alone, nobody is feeling or seeing what you do but don't leave yourself like this, the bottom of the glass or bottle will not be the answer, see your GP,gets some time out, speak to some body that can get you through this, remember there are more people out there that feel the same they are not strong enough to tell yet!

I have pointed out to management about people booking til 5 when I only book what I do. I was assured that they go through it and correct any discrepencies. There is also alot of favouritism at our depot. Our union rep tried to get people to work to rule today to try and stop the managers putting extra work onto people that already have enough. As soon as they came back I asked someone if they were gonna stick to it and he told me he couldn't work to rule because he had to get all his deliveries done and that if he did work to rule he wouldn't be able to complete his manifest. I've spoke my mind before and got threatened with my job. I brought it up in a "1 to 1" but it went no further. As for for the get another job/quit comments; do you think it's that easy? What should I tell my partner and 2 kids when the repo man is taking our house and possesions. The jobs around this area a few and far between and low paid when you can get one. I'm off on holiday next week. A break may do some good, if not i'll see my gp.

Don't wait to see your GP, get down to see him/her ASAP and at least get the ball rolling (it can take a long time for treatments to come through). You can also go here http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to see how bad you are (take the HAD test and this will give you a hint about how bad/well you are).

Try not to dwell on things. Thinking about these things for too long will only make you worse. Have a nice holiday and look after yourself. :Very Happy

I am really pleased you have a weeks holiday as you sound like its really getting you down at the moment. I would still consider seeing your GP and having a chat, it cant really hurt can it. I hope you get a good rest a manage to un-wind and relax. All the best pal :Very Happy

I gave the best years of my working life to a previous employer only to end up feeling exactly the same as you, sleepless nights etc, and then have over a year off with depression never to return.
Now I've got a job I quite like, yes with Royal Mail, it's easy to look back with hindsight and realise I should have looked elsewhere and got out many, many years earlier.

I was in a similar situation 4 years ago when I transferred to deliveries from processing onto one of the worst floater duties. I was getting bullied by the managers into working past my finishing time but claiming OT at first then they tried to make me do it without claiming as well. "cutting off is willful delay" they would say or "your not working at the required rate". This caused a lot of sleepless nights.

It got better tho, I was fortunate that my dad was a postie as well and as soon as he realised how bad it was affecting me he had a chat with me and we got it sorted. First off I joined the Union the rep came and had a good chat with me about how I had found it since I'd started deliveries. The next heavy day I told the manager I wanted to cut off "there's not enough there to justify cutting off" he said and walked off. It was a Saturday and I have 6 bags all over 14kg it would have been tight getting it done during the week let alone on a short day. So out I went and managed to get 4 bags done, I brought 1 back and put it on the managers desk "what's that?" he asked "that's a bag I couldn't get done. there's another at the drop point as well" I replied. Then I went home.

Come Monday and I'm called into the DOMs office (I took my Union rep with me) apparently I hadn't informed the manager I couldn't complete and wanted to cutoff. My union rep informed the DOM otherwise, he also informed the DOM that several posties had cut off that day and even more had claimed and how I'd received no training since starting deliveries 6 months ago for example I knew nothing about handling specials, until this moment I had thrown them off with the mail in my frame and left them in pouches at the drop point. There was also the the fact that several of the duties I was covering were know to be heavy since they had been timed.

After this I don't get any grief about claiming or cutting off. I can honestly say that joining the Union made my life at work much better.

Ignore Calpsy, he is just a stirrer who loves to take the rise out of anybody, I wouldn't give him the steam of my shite, so do not let him get under your skin, I just think of the cash and ignore the bull, get a good Union Rep involved they can make the difference.

Yeh thats right quit. Because RM's bosses are now trained in bullying quit. f**k your mortgage, quit. Blimey one man puts his feelings on this FORUM and you jump on him like nobodys business.

Anyone who has had a go at this bloke and has NOT moaned at some time on this forum then carry on having a go. Otherwise show a little empathy.

Some people simply get worn down by the system & nobody is immune , there are idiots that are too thick , stupid , arrogant - whatever ! to get depressed etc . The weak jibes sounds like childish macho B/S .

There was a comment about prisons , unless you've been in the army or public school you might as well be on another planet . RM offices are institutions too , there's people in both white and blue shirts that should never be let out of one ! .

The important thing is that someone get's time out , gets things in proportion and perspective and comes out better at the other end . Those ar**holes will always be the same but that's their problem .

Bullying / confrontation / pressure etc is in proportion to the amount of poor management or the inadequacy of the person doing it .
