Re: How's Running Royal Mail?
I suspect that this time, it might be a misunderstanding (at least I hope it is). Because there isn't any competition for actually delivering letters. But ther IS considerable competition for processing it. As this is in the Blue Shirts section: It would be a logical (but not neccessarily corect) assumption that we were discussing competition for delivering the mail.

Re: How's Running Royal Mail?
As there IS no competition for the "final mile" then the assumption must be that mention of the "competition" must refer to RMG as a whole?
My post where "competition" was initially mentioned also talks of ex-posties/managers making long-term policy decisions, so it's a fair leap to surmising that "competition" here refers to other posties delivering mail.
Sadly it's the usual "I want to be obtuse" theme again from a certain poster.....

No they don't - wet behind the ear university graduates straight in the forces at Officer level,Dorset Plodder wrote:The Armed Forces always insist on someone working their way up from the bottom and for good reason. That depends on whether you want to be a Comissioned Officer (strait in), or a Non Comissioned Officer (worked your way up).

All officers rely on their NCOs to help run their units and the best ones take their NCOs advice and make it look like their own

Re: How's Running Royal Mail?
NCO's working their way up to commissioned officer is not a common thing tho. I'm not sure about the Army but in the Royal Marines the Officers have to the same training as the Troopers plus a bit extra so all the Troopers know that the Officer ordering them about can do everything they can and more.andy2007 wrote:That depends on whether you want to be a Comissioned Officer (strait in), or a Non Comissioned Officer (worked your way up).

There is 2 types of Officers, Ruperts and Rodneys, Rodney being the useless incompetent ones, just like a slimey RM manager in some cases (a prime candidate for "Fragging" in a war zone) the other will get better with experience and a massive bollocking from the RSM when necessary and learn from it.

Re: How's Running Royal Mail?
Correct but they are not just dropped into being in charge of men. They have to go through Sandhurst, Basic Training, Officer Training etc. Then they are placed with a section with a 1st Lieutenant (or equivalent) already in command and then the progress through the ranks. Usually its at about 1st Lieutenant level that they are put in day to day command of any good size group of squaddies.Lounge Lizard wrote:No they don't - wet behind the ear university graduates straight in the forces at Officer level,Dorset Plodder wrote:The Armed Forces always insist on someone working their way up from the bottom and for good reason. Also Officers are fully expected to do exactly what the soldiers they command do, but better, quicker and more effectively even if its not written in stone its expected that if you want men to do what you command them to do then to have their respect you must also be willing and able to do it, and show it as well.
Graduate managers at Royal Mail, at least in deliveries just seem to be dropped on an Alley/Section and then left to sink or swim. They are never expected to go on delivery - in fact from what I can see its seen as a failure of management if they do have to do a delivery.

vaguely, I did hear of one Rodney who was so dangerous with weapons that he was banned from being near any, he was later killed in the Isle of Skye helicopter crash, probably not him tho.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:there was always that rumour floating around in the 80sNWpostie wrote:disgruntledpostie1 wrote:All officers rely on their NCOs to help run their units and the best ones take their NCOs advice and make it look like their own
