London post workers start strike

Postal workers in London have begun a three-day strike in a row over jobs and pay cuts.

The walkout, by an estimated 12,000 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), will continue on Monday and Tuesday.

The union said Royal Mail was cutting jobs and pay against a national agreement which it said was affecting postal services.

Royal Mail insisted the union stood in the way of modernisation.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson angered union leaders when he said they were guilty of a "bury your head in the sand" attitude.

However, Martin Walsh, the union's London divisional representative, said Royal Mail had turned down an offer of talks, claiming the company was being controlled by the government.

"We are up for change but we are not prepared to let management or the government rubbish a great public service just so they can sell it."

The CWU's last three day strike ended on 10 July.

Adding to this, does the Mail centre strikes on tuesday start with the early shift ? ie 6:00 - 6:00
as i hear action next day too

Because of delays in getting the ballot papers out, the offices in the Kent Invicta Branch who have requested strike action have had to wait 2 months for the ballot papers to finally arrive today. We want to join London however it seems we have had to wait eternity. :cfo

From what I've heard it's not only our office that's feeling the strain. we went in today and faced 2 days work because everyone else is working. the word on the floor now is that at least 5 office's in the SE London district are thinking off going back to work on strike day's. In short by the time the rest of the counrty sort's it self out it could all be to late.

The strike is working and is hurting Royal Mail. I have not heard of offices in South East going back to work , and it would be the biggest mistake ever if that was to happen as today notice was given on SE1`s revision to come in by executive action along with a number of others.

I only done meetings in Lee and Eltham and Catford in the last couple of weeks and their was no sign of any negativity. Yes striking hurts but the alternative is to roll over and allow management to remove all your terms and conditions inculding your monthly bonus.

The National Ballot will take place but in the mean time we are on the front line in the attacks and have to fight fire with fire and the dispute is hurting. It would hurt even more if people start doing the job properly instead of coming in early , driving their cars and not taking their meal reliefs.

It's hurting us. So far we have lost £300 in pay and as the rest of the country is still working when we return the next day we face 2 day's work. I heard people saying today our union is out of touch. They feel other's are either dragging their feet or they simply dont want to join the strike. I'm only posting what I have heard and how people in our office are feeling.

If we stop striking Royal Mail will attack us even more we now have over 50 offices in London with execuitive action being taken another 30 with statements of intent. Plus they are introducing outdoor absorbiton which is outside of the national agreememt.

The strike is causing a blacklog and with London Mail centres out tommorrow then its causing a massive backlog which you cant clear.

The strike has opened talks with Royal Mail so progress has been made.

We cant suspend the strikes until the National Ballot because we will have to wait at least 6 weeks however we are looking to take strike action with other others around the uk.

Royal Mail want to reduce your wages and your terms and conditions as well as cut jobs and complusory transfer indivudals out of offices. You will lose far more if you dont support the strike . Once again happy to attend a meeting of your members just PM me.

i was at the lee eltham meetings.
thought you got the union's point across well. if we dont fight now then when ??. we all know they want to make more jobs part-time and god only knows what else. they pay out bonuses to the managers and then freeze our pay. friday eltham had to take out walk's for nothing it'll start as a summer thing but unless we stand our ground now they'll have us doing it all year round. yep it hurt's we're all losing money and yea we do get a lot of work when we go back. but i for one am not for quiting now.
