Postman almost lost arm in savage attack by two rottweilers

A postman who was savaged by two rottweilers almost lost his arm during the frenzied attack, it emerged today.

Keith Davies, 54, was left with critical injuries after the attack by the guard dogs as he delivered Christmas cards to a £1.3 million mansion.

He was only saved by a brave bricklayer who fought off the snarling dogs with an iron bar.

Now, in a landmark case, two people who owned the dogs and the private land will appear in court.

Because the attack took place in a private cul-de-sac it was thought the owners would escape prosecution because the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act does not apply on private land.

But Cambridgeshire Constabulary said a man and woman will appear at Cambridge Magistrates on Monday over the attack.

Mr Davies, who was covering the round for a colleague, was savaged outside the property in exclusive Trumpington on the outskirts of Cambridge on December 22.

Anthony Lunn, 44, a bricklayer working nearby, fought off the savage rottweilers by swinging an iron bar at them - before they turned on him.

The heroic father-of-two eventually ran over one of the rottweilers in his van to stop it ripping at Keith's body.

An ambulance service spokesman said crews called to the scene had been 'traumatised' by the incident.

Mr Davies, from Royston, Herts., was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, where surgeons battled to save his arm in an eight hour operation.

He spent weeks in hospital, underwent numerous skin grafts and needed intensive physiotherapy to help regain the use of his injured limb.

The massive dogs, one which reportedly weighed 13 stone, were put down on the orders of their owner, Robert Stewart, 43, immediately after the attack.

Every year around 6,000 postal workers are bitten by dogs, with 70 per cent attacked on private property.

Labour MP Angela Smith, who is campaigning for a change in the law, said the decision to take the dog's owners to court was a 'positive step'.

She said: 'It is a grey area of the law. It is the first time a police force has taken this action and tested this area of the law and I will be very interested to see the outcome.

'It is a positive step forward but new measures must be put into place to give the Dangerous Dog Act some teeth.'

Mr Stewart is managing director of plastic bag packaging company Stevenage Packaging Limited which he founded at the age of 23.

The company, based in Stevenage, Herts., produces over 250,000,000 polythene bags a year and has won four regional business awards.

Under the brand of 'The Differentiator' he provides business coaching and gives speeches on 'entrepreneurialism, dream realisation, true customer love, etc'. Mr Stewart lives with his wife Hilary, 43.

What posses people to have these kind of dogs in the first place. I hope this poor guy recovers. But I don't think he will ever get over it. Cheers to the brave brickie who probably saved his life. And before you say it I know not all rottweilers are the same.

true but when the turn bad, they are unstoppable, the owner clearly set out to train his dogs to act like Guard dogs not as pets.

Even pet dogs are dangerous as any dog will protect their property and if you doing your job come to meet it is dangerous for you and the dog if you know how to kill them!. It is time owners took their responsibility seriously and not hid behind 13th century laws and all that bollocks!.
