‘Royal Mail is extremely sorry for the distress and upset caused’

AN ELDERLY lady trying to help out her grandson got herself into a pickle after her parcel went missing in the post.

Mrs Barclay, aged 83, was trying to send £1,000 cash to her grandson David McDowall in Peninver after he received a large electricity bill.

She thought she was doing a good deed and sent the money on March 19 of this year in confidence and by recorded delivery with Royal Mail.

However, David never received the money and he later found out it had never left the Glasgow depot by contacting local postman Jamie Girvan.

This week the family received confirmation that they would get the sum of £1,000 and a full apology from Royal Mail.

Mrs Barclay’s daughter Margaret, who lives in Southend, has been in correspondence on her behalf over the last few months with Royal Mail. She said: ‘When I contacted Royal Mail at the start they told me that they could not help me and that I needed proof that the money was sent. My mother had a receipt which stated the amount on it but still they refused. We seemed to be going in circles.’

David’s mother-in-law suggested to Margaret that she should write to the Judge in The Sunday Post, so she did.

When the Royal Mail were told that the story would be appearing in the national press they immediately agreed to put it right.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: ‘Royal Mail is extremely sorry for the distress and upset caused to Mrs Barclay and we apologise profusely. Royal Mail will be reimbursing Mrs Barclay in full and measures have now been put in place to ensure this never happens again.’

This is an astoundingly stupid action and must be viewed as unbelievable in the extreme!. Even if she did send it (CASH MUST NOT BE SENT THROUGH THE POSTAL SERVICE) Unless it is sent special delivery!. And even then their are limits on amounts and compensation and you can buy additional insurance if the standard rates do not cover it!. It must be put down to experience and if anyone else other than an 83 year old they would be called into question about their story!. It beggars belief it really does!.

well it depends, my old mum wanted to send gift vouchers to my sister for her little ones for xmas a few years back, as these vouchers were as good as cash, i told her to make sure they went Special delivery, i stated not recorded special delivery, although she told them she wanted special delivery as the items were as good as cash the Post office insisted recorded was good enough, in the end she came home without sending, i went to the PO and sent them special delivery a couple of days later. So incorrectly trained PO staff can just as easily cause things to go by wrong method as people not getting the message about not sending cash by anything other than SD.

She had a receipt that stated the ammount? That could only be Special not recorded as you could not get such a receipt for recorded only proof of posting, and if thats the case why were RM playing games?

And who is this "local Postman" that knows if one item of mail leaves the Glasgow depot when i struggle to remember Recordeds for my own walk that i delivered the day before let alone a whole MC.

It is no wonder we are in such disarray with the shamble of shite :cfo we have running this service into the ground and every chav and his mutt :mfo think they can fleece the royalmail!.
