I wonder what would happen if..........
..........we actually worked together as a company ?
Royal Mail seems to survive, indeed thrive on confrontation and controversy, with it's rule by decree style of management and it's panic driven cuts to the workforce and customer service.
Have they ever considered how much more successful they would be if they treated their employees as people instead of simply assets that are expendable like the machinery they replace or upgrade on a regular basis.
Have they also considered the customer loyalty and respect they would experience if they were seen to be workplace peacemakers rather than industrial warmongers.
There is no doubt that we need modernisation as a business but slow, steady and considered progress with consultation will produce a better result for everyone concerned than a hell bent charge into the future with staff, unions and customers left behind amidst the debris of a once great but now greedy business.
The management style of our business has to change and our new chairman hasn't yet picked up on this - we don't trust them because they continually lie to us - they are less experienced than most of the people they manage, but refuse to learn from or consult them - and they are driven by the most discredited reward system in recent times - "THE BONUS"
The senior management will never hear the truth from below whilst they rule by fear - they will only hear what they expect. Undelivered mail isn't the only thing that lies hidden in this business and it's time a few more doors to dark places were opened.
Royal Mail holds up well against it's unfairly supported competition and crippling restrictions on pricing agreements, but a happy and supported workforce would render those problems irrelevant - it's true that we are simply an asset, but we are the best asset Royal Mail has - and when you have an asset that good - you bloody well look after it !!!

:lfo first started that fear , uncertaintity & doubt idea or more like FUB , The first people to use it was the two brothers that ran IBM , it backfired as they lost their best people to HP , Microsoft etc that were a bit more easy going and/ or had healthier more positive cultures , once they were leaders in IT , now taken over by Lenevo , the Think Pad lap tops used to have a good reputation now it's just another chinese made lap top .Pinky 1 wrote:Exactly what i've been saying on another thread ....except you put it better![]()
That macho management style was used in the 80's , as people will know on here , things were very polarized then , managers could say " we've 4 million unemployed that will do your job and will work 12 hours a day to prove " loyalty " ". You can only push people so far , on the oil rigs there was fatal fires at the end of the 80's and many of the riggers wanted a union which was a absolute no no to these oilmen in charge ; it just proves that you can't always buy people off & hope they'll turn a blind eye and not rock the boat .
The other thing I've noticed is that RM harks back to the era of American style managers which were in vogue in the early 90's , everything had to be so simple that an absolute beginner could understand , with RM the inexperience and poor training , lack of leadership & motivational skills is too obvious . The 90's was also known for amorality and spivvyness .
I've spoken to reps from USDAW & the GMB , even the moderate ones hated :lfo as everything is so american . There's a lot of Walmart / Asda style regimentation , RM is a bit more complicated and involved than a supermarket chain , that's why RM would look to an outsider as a mad world or the lunatics were running the asylum as common sense , proportion and perspective , as we all know goes out of the window .
Probably the same issues as anywhere else only taken to literal extremes
RM works to a fashion but so did steam trains , but that doesn't mean they should be brought back
In a outdated top down style they need bullies or at best useful idiots to make them feel safe , it's amazing that all these rabid true blue people like to be involved in state firms if the state is taking all the risk and rolling the gravy train .

Yeah the managers have a lot to answer for but unfortunately it's large swathes of the workforce that are voluntarily undermining our conditions. Early starters, car users and the headless chicken run around and finish before noon types.

I think a lot are scared of losing their jobs, especially the partimers as they don't know all the ins and outs.I feel this is part of the reason for them doing so much for so little in return. The training is crap.Three years and I'm still learning new things. Three years how bad is that. Communication company that does not communicate.

Serious question, would you go that little bit further, try that bit harder,if your manager/s respected you more.
For the record,my answer is a yes.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Most of the people who do it though I find have been there long enough to know better and if they were so scared of losing their jobs maybe they're be less careless. They race around without a care for accuracy or quality of service and regularly get away with murder.I think a lot are scared of losing their jobs, especially the partimers as they don't know all the ins and outs.I feel this is part of the reason for them doing so much for so little in return. and here - we have one female manager at our place that everyone will do the best for, the alley runs smoothly when she is in charge, there are no problems onrhino49 wrote:Absolutely agree PostmanPOSTMAN wrote:Serious question, would you go that little bit further, try that bit harder,if your manager/s respected you more.

sorting and packets are shared equitably. If we ask for help she goes looking for volunteers and when she comes back you know she has done her best so you don't mind if you have to go over. She also never queries overtime, ever. She treats us with respect and gets it back in spades, she is way and above the best manager I have ever dealt with in RM.

My answer is yes too but I know that my managers are not up to the job so they can only manage through bullying and intimidation.POSTMAN wrote:Serious question, would you go that little bit further, try that bit harder,if your manager/s respected you more.

Have known a few like that as well, don't know of any being promoted though
The ones that are promoted are the useless brown nosing tossers who treat you like s**t and blame staff for all they're own mistakes.
