seniority is being used to protect the longer serving from the worst royal mail is throwing at us.

It is causing those members to abandon the fight of the new part-time work force to be treating fairly.

My solution is not to abondon seniority but to deal with more important problems like having achievable duties for all.

Some people have said that we should just deal with having awful duties because in the past they had the the same (although we all know they still finished 1 hour early instead of 2)

Being shafted and having Royal Mail ignore Health and Safety issues is not the RIGHT of short serving employees, normally part-time guys.

So as I said, selfishness is the reason for supporting seniority. Fix the other problems first and perhaps it can have its place to reward loyal employees as opposed to bullinging partime workers

I support seniority.
I am one of the senior posties in the office i work at, i always think if the least senior aint got a bad job then we all should be OK.

ad0128, How can you think seniority is protecting the most senior from what RM is throwing at us ?
I ask this as i have been made a floater through nothing but spite from managers because i have stood up to them & tried to help other posties. So i'm doing some of the heavier deliveries. You can read in other threads posties with 30 years being made floaters so again how can it be protecting the senior members ?

My solution would not be "take senior men off floating duties"

My solution would be "ensure floaters, whoever they are, are not taken advantage of and unfairly treated"

THEN HAVE THE REPICK, NOT BEFORE OTHER ISSUES ARE FIXED

Managers relative 20 points
mouthy barrack room lawyer -10 points ect

thus ensuring that people who deserve it get the best positions

Exactly.

Some people have said that we should just deal with having awful duties because in the past they had the the same (although we all know they still finished 1 hour early instead of 2)
There have always been crap Duties. Long before we had all these problems. It's just a case of perspective: The crap Duties that the longer serving Posties endured, were no worse (and in some cases better), than the so-called good Duties now. That's what all these battles with Management are about. Trying to stop things getting any worse!

Being shafted and having Royal Mail ignore Health and Safety issues is not the RIGHT of short serving employees, normally part-time guys.
No. And if they try to ignore the Health and Safety issues: Stand your ground, do the job safely, and involve your H&S Rep. The law is on your side, when it comes to H&S. And if all else fails. Contact the Health and Safety Executive on: 08453450055

There's no selfishness about it. Any more than there was, when the current senior Posties, were just starting out.

Seniorty is the best way of dealing with duty allocations. I have seen so many times how the managers: mother, father, grandmother, brother, sister, girlfriend (wife) and friends have all gained vacancies within administration and other areas of management, and this needs to stop. I believe that all duties performed by postman/women should go up for picking (based on whether the person can do the job) and not appointed to someone, and management and administration vacancies should be allocated by qualifications like in most companies (e.g. city councils, county councils and the NHS) depending on how successful they are at their interview.

Those newcomers moaning about Seniority, who claim supporters of it are selfish, seem to forget that Seniority applies to EVERYBOBY and so is fair. What's worse is when they are still moaning about covering different walks a few years on after they have declined NOT to go for any of the less popular walks that become vacant. As to an alternative, any other would further add to the way managers abuse their authority. So, stop moaning and keep looking out for vacancies.

So terms like "newcomers", "newbies" and "newies" are acceptable on this forum. Fine. So I don't expect to be challenged if I refer to 20 year plus senior men/women as "dead wood" then.
How much worse can it get? A LOT F****** WORSE !!!

I don't mind particularly, but 'dead wood' is rather derogatory, while newcomer, newie, newbie etc
are just descriptive terms of a newer employee, without any derogatory implications.
After all we were all 'newbies' once. Will you be 'dead wood' in a few years time?

The term you quote is used everywhere in the world, personally i can't see a problem with it.Anyone else?

When i started this forum i was a 'newbie' at it.
What would you suggest we use?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
