Part-TIME postie Rob Wotherspoon has seen his hopes of a full-time job go up in smoke.

Rob, 26, is a victim of Royal Mail's drive to "improve flexibility" by employing more part-timers.

He had hoped to land a full-time job in Bristol. Instead his hours were cut by three to 29 a week.

So instead of gaining about £60 a week as a full-timer he is now out of pocket - by £1,000 a year.

Rob said on the picket line: "Changes are being bulldozed through and people are really fed up."

New dad Nick Walker says a cutback in overtime at his office has cost him £170 a week.

The 32-year-old postie could earn £450 a week by working four 10-hour shifts plus an extra two days.

He said: "Now Royal Mail wants us to work five eight-hour shifts and it's blown a big hole in my pay."

Nick, based in Islington, North London, makes up some money by doing two nightshifts - the only overtime now available.

That means he sees little of his partner Yvonne or eightmonth-old daughter Olivia.

He added: "People are under a lot of stress."

How can a man provide for his family on part time wages?
The government have to top up wages with tax credits and this is creating a dependancy on handouts in turn fostering a benefit culture and single parenthood.

Royal mail as a responsible employer would know this and quite willingly cut jobs,hours and pensions knowing full well that the government will pick up the tab.

The welfare state was started by Beveridge after the second world war as a safety net when a man would find himself out of a job and unable to provide for his family.

This has now metamorphed into a colassal monster in which a culture of single parenthood has arisen with a dependency on it,and now business leaders are following in the footsteps of the single mothers in their part time temporary contract workforce supported by the welfare state at the expense of the tax payer.

It is time that this dependency culture came to an end and that people are again able to earn an honest days wage that can pay the bills without having to depend on the likes of Gordon Brown to put food on your table.

What the government gives, they can also take it away, you should never have to rely on benefits to make up your wages.

As for the story, many of us on this site have been warning that RM only want a PT workforce (based on the Dutch model) so, unless we all stand up now and fight then the future is PT for all with only management being FT.
