according to the CWU's 'lighten the load' leaflet your supposed to be conveyed back to the office.
http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 36&t=14963" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
ACCELARATION & RECOVERY
As part of the Walk Assesment - Ensure that sufficient acceleration and recovery methods/transport to and from delivery star and finish are in place and that appropriate mechanical aids and equipment is provided on all routes.
doesn't happen in our office though management quote SDD and say we finish on the street ( we get 15 mins pouching off time). if the CWU's policy is that they don't want staff using private cars then they need to get a clear unambiguase agreement sorting this out. But If your colleagues are using private cars (i have in past and may do in future) They should only take their first bag this is all they are insured for via the bond they sign with RM.

personally if you dont want to travel all the way back to office then dont take car to work. i dont drive and even travelling back home from some of my deliveries took over 2 hours due to frequency of buses bac home. this is with pouching off before hand, if didnt it could be even longer to get home by having to make detour to D/O. i had to rely on public transport to and from the delivery office and most of time waited upto an hour for my bags to be dropped off and thats with me working and finishing an overloaded bag to start with.

those that rely on their cars have it way easier than those that have to rely on public transport. in my view quit moaning, if you have a car use it to transport 1st bag as forementioned (as this what your insured for when signin up your car to be used) this way you have your car at start of your delivery to get back with and then you can drive to pouch off or to delivery office.

not sure that your insured to drive to pouch off, think you have to do that before returning to your car.

At ours, we use taxis!! Have done since the SDD disaster came in. RM pays for them. Ring a cab to go out if no van available, ring a cab to come back to D.O. They got a contract with a local private hire firm.

When I finish I start walking back to the office (its about 20/30mins back depending how knackered I am). two things normally happen either I get picked up on route by someone heading in in a van or I walk all the way back. When asked about it the following morning i.e. extra OT I used to say well I phoned for lift but no one came so walked. This went on for 3 weeks, now nothing is said and I continue the same process daily. If I was to catch a bus which I sometimes do when its to hot to walk in it take about 45mins to get back and even then the bus don't quite get as far as the DO. If I have to be finished on time I factor in walking back in so as I finish at 14:45 I factor my last letter as 14:15 as I don't very often get out until 11:15 ish you can imagine how much gets cut offs (I cut off at least every Thursday as my wife works and I need to collect kids from school).
Why do you finish so late ?? Most of us ( even those that dont use their cars ) are in the house for 12.30 pm .

We can start about 8.30 am once we lapse and that gets done at 8am .

acceleration time, to and from your delivery should be shown on your 318(ours is 15 mins).
if it takes you longer then you will need to adjust your times accordingly. Obviously if you give you DOM the opportunity, and explain that if there is no chance of a lift back then you will stop delivering earlier than normal to enable you to finish on your time, then i'm sure your DOM may take this opportunity afforded by you to them to rethink their stance of returning you to the office.
if your 318 does indeed show acceleration times then i am assuming RM take the responsibility of getting you out to your delivery and accept that responsibility so in the opposite direction the same responsibility must apply.
taken from sdd agreement,
f Where deliveries are completed within the agreed office workplan then employees will be allowed to pouch off without returning to the office. given this i would be inclined to ask the DOM what the practice and options avaliable were prior to this, as this is only one new option being made avaliable to the postman and postwoman it is not compulsory.
Ask for a copy of the local agreement. If they cannot produce it, then it doesn't exist

POSTMAN wrote:At our place we have 15mins built in to duties for coming back to the office,it's never been used since our revision.
But previously,i used to pick people up and bring them back.

Twas geat as they would have to stop working around 30mins before their duty finishing time.
We've been informed that we end our shift out on our walk's. That's why so many of us use our car's. We have noway of getting back to the office to picup our car.

whats a 318? and i dont drive my car to work as i smashed it up a few months ago lol, but if im thinking of getting a car in the near future and theirs no way on earth im gunna waste an hour or 2 getting 2 busses to the office on way to work and 2 busses to get my car, when i can just take it and drive home. i may be able to get the packet driver to drop my bags to my pouch boxes i havent got (post office and a local shop). but what my point is, people are not going to stop using their cars when they are not going be returned to the office, it makes no sense at all!

I have to say that there appears to be some confusion over the use of Private Cars. The Union is not against people using them to accelerate themselves out to their duties if Public Transport is the only option. IMHO and reading between the lines what they are against is people using them as a mobile pouch drop throughout their round, or those that use them to get out when the local practice is that you are conveyed out by RM driver.

Again at least thats how I read it.

Unquestionably returning to your delivery office should be done in duty time, if it was the case that all staff returned in duty time then you could imagine that would mean more hours needed to run your delivery office and that means more full time jobs!

Why the need to return to the office?

Since SDD its been finish and go home for us, thats 10-15 minute bus ride once I have pouched off at the PO.

I asked the gaffer why other offices had to return to the office after their walks were done and he was stumped too, mind that doesnt take much.
