Last week's 24-hour walkout in 20 Royal mail offices is due to be followed by three days of industrial action in London beginning this Saturday.
A further 450 delivery offices in towns and cities across Britain are now being balloted by the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
If, as the union expects, they join the strike it could mean up to 30,000 workers walking out next month in a significant escalation of the dispute over modernisation, job cuts and working practices.
The new ballots are mainly taking place in the eastern counties and England, the South West and Scotland, said Kevin Slocombe of the CWU.
"We have 450 other offices set to ballot and become involved. We expect to announce a lot more industrial action," said Mr Slocombe.
"We are probably looking at 25,000 to 30,000 people taking part."
He added: "We want to bring modernisation in, but we want it to be by agreement. We are not hiding from the fact that there will be job losses and things have to change."
The three day strike in London is scheduled to begin on Saturday, continuing next Monday and Tuesday. It comes after Friday's walkout at 20 Royal Mail offices which could disrupt deliveries for up to a week.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "The union claims to support modernisation, yet acts to destroy it.
"Royal Mail apologises to those customers who experienced disruption to the service a result of the CWU's strike action and assures them that we are continuing to do all we can to deliver the mail."

Re: Post walkout set to triple
what a cheek that RM spokesperson has. in my mail centre we have had no modernisation , except some new software for the LSMs. the only thing that has happened is there is less people doing the work or cuts have been made to the services.
