Been an rti for all of my four and a bit years at rm. dont bother me one bit. infact, i quite like doing something different on a weekly basis. BUT what does bother me is that i have been waiting for a long weekend now for 18 weeks :( and what makes matters even worse, some other rtis in the office have had 2 in the last 3 weeks. they aint favourites or anything, just got lucky i spose. i have spoke to union and have been told that theres nothing in writing stating that rtis should have a long weekend every 6 weeks like the duty holders (which i think is wrong, surely its a case of equal oppertunitys????) to make matters worse, i cant even book a day off untill the middle of oct coz were so under staffed. i feel like a prisoner, i dont know what my day off is from one day to the next so i cant make any plans with my partner and baby, nor can we sort out which days for her to work as i dont know which day im off.
SO, i was wondering, IS there anything in writing to say that i am entitled to a long weekend every 6 weeks like everyone else?
your help is greatly appreciated people.
thanks

I don't think there is anything in writing about a long weekend in 6 weeks but if others in the same situation are getting them and your not you may have a case for a greviance based on unfair treatment.

1 There should be a reserve list based on seniority, that's how the reserves pick their duties.NOT MANAGERS!!
2 Although you should have a reserve seniority list, you should also keep an eye out on the top reserves taking all the long weekend/sat off duties.
You should keep some kind of average so even though you are low on the list you still get a chance to have a long weekend or at least a sat off the same amount as the others.
It wont be perfect but it will be more fairer than if there weren't an average.
And more.

You are entitled to 1 weekend off in 6 just like the regular duty holders. Operational needs may mean that they cannot be literally 1 every 6 BUT over a longer period (i.e a year) you are entitled to the same amount of weekends off. If these weekends are not forthcoming after you have highlighted the problem then you have grounds for putting in a HR1 form, harrassment and bullying. On the grounds of descrimination. (leave reserves should not be treated differently to regular duty holders).
DEFINITION OF PREJUDICE - An attitude that predisposes a person to think about, feel or percieve and act in a favourable or unfavourable way towards an individual or group.
I would claim that RM are treating reserves, as a group, or as individuals, in an unfavourable way.
You have to be strong and show them you will stand up for yourselves, otherwise you will just have to accept what they do.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been. Having had this in our office our Area Rep has said that he sees no reason why a reserve cannot adopt the day off of the duty that he/ she is covering be it Monday, Saturday or whatever and also a list should be drawn up so that all reserves get a long weekend off every 6 weeks. If they don't agree then put in a Grievance and get it heard higher up.
Having said this the majority of reserves in our office don't mind what day they get off as long as they get their long weekends every 6 weeks like everyone else.
Some thing that also crops up on here a lot is the 'manager has changed my day off' malarkey.
If you are on duty 'a' next week, and the day off for that day is say fri, then the manager has no right to change it.

We are having the same argument in our place,we have done loads of things to get it put right like using the equal opps and that a part time and a full time staff have the same rights,we have now pushed it to the point that we have made the managers do a spread sheet with all reserves on to make sure that they are getting the same times off,we also said that we would make sure that it was made public knowledge that the reserve manager gets his saturdays off every 4 weeks and that if they could make sure that was happening they could do the same for the staff.

Yes your right and we have looked at that part of the agreement,as you know RM are not in the party to honour the agreements that have been signed up ready to use,IMHO i believe that managers are a tad lazy, they would have to do some form of work or engadge thier brain to make sure all the staff get the same entitlement, it would also mean that they would have to do somthing to earn the wages they are payed which did't involve putting the kettle on,we have found managers in our office are more intreasted in thier own welfare not the welfare of the staff around them, its an easy option to keep pulling reserve staff around so duty's are covered,if you did to managers what they do to staff they would be up in arms they would not except any form of mis-treatment toward themselves if it ment they were getting less,it's down to us all to make sure th reserve staff get the same chances as the rest of us.
