WHAT WOULD YOU REPLACE SELECTION BY SENIORTY WITH
All this discussion about Seniority and is it acceptable keeps coming up and in all the threads I have asked the non supporters what they would replace it with. Yet to date I don't have reply so I shall ask again.
If you don't support Seniority as a method of selection what would you replace it with. Anyone care to answer- in fact I'll start a new thread to see if I get any replies.

Re: WHAT WOULD YOU REPLACE SELECTION BY SENIORTY WITH
I'm 13 years in,i'm about half way up out of 30ish people.
When i was 1 day in i recognised and respected seniorty straight away.
I had kack when i started and a bit of kack now,in 20 odd years time it will be less kack.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The only alternative to seniority is letting the managers decide and TBH that is just a disaster waiting to happen so, it may be flawed but it's the best system I can see.

What does seniority mean now? having an easier duty? having best day OFF? I mean sats...Think royal mail should bring back rotating duties!! Seniority doesn't count in holiday picks so why anything else?

Re: WHAT WOULD YOU REPLACE SELECTION BY SENIORTY WITH
As I've already said in the "Really Really p**ed off" thread: I believe that despite it's flaws. The seniority system is the fairest one available to us. Considering that most Duties require physical fitness, which deteriorates at dfferent rates, in different people. Rather than requiring qualifications, amassed over the years. As in many other jobs. So the choice that comes with seniority, allows those who're starting to struggle through age. The ability to pick an easier duty.
The big problem with that, is that there are people who started at RM, 10 of even 20 years, after some of their younger Collegues. I don't think it'd be fair to just go off someone's age, instead of taking length of service into account. As that would be Age Discrimination. But why not have an age weighting system, similar to the London weighting that we have on wages. So that older Poste's get a boost to their seniority (regardless of how much they have to start with).
So for example: Someone who's actually got a lot of years more than someone benefiting from the weithing, would continue to have more seniority, even if they're younger. But the people with less of a head start, could be overtaken, if they're too young to benefit from the weighting. So we wouldn't be in a position where people haven't got any chance of getting beyond the crap Duties. But those who've put the time in, working their way up. Sometimes spending many years on the crap Duties, still have the advantage, as a reward for going through that.
What do you think?

How about picking you're duty out of a hat, and the first person to pick would be randomly chosen by computer,
Everybody wins, the senior man with the most years in would have less time to do under the new system, and the jnr boys and girls who hate the seniority so much would have this system for the remainder of they're time in RM whether it be 20, 30 or 40yrs, when they would have been regarded as senior

Ideally walks for the most part could be made far more equal-preferably with people form out with R/M and the Unions
setting the walks--if millions of pounds can thrown down the drain creating new names (remember consignia) a few more could be spent on this. with of course the walks being manually planned, plodding the beat, giving a true idea of the time the walks take.

correct I've seen it turn into a farce , the initial ruling we had pre privatization was suitability for supervisor grades only but the goalposts got moved locally thanks to a alkie rep that made Jimmy Hoffa look straight and his idiot stepson as " Youth Representative " .disgruntledpostie1 wrote:The only alternative to seniority is letting the managers decide and TBH that is just a disaster waiting to happen so, it may be flawed but it's the best system I can see.
Nepotism & a Office Desk played a huge part in vacancy filling and promotion and I don't think they were too fussy whether it was male or female .

i have over 30 years service, but now find myself back as a reserve, spare or whatever you want to call it.some people in my office seem to have been "Appointed". they start of as a casual ,but after a few months get put on a walk which is vacant and just keep on it. this vacancy is never advertised, and when you ask why not, you just get blank stares.

Was 1447 in my Office back in 85, with all the job cuts and losing processing, were now down to about 350 just clocked the new seniority sheet after all the EVR's and I've broken into the 90's
A jnr man now, wants shot of seniority but will he still feel the same in 10yrs

We used to have something called a mini resign just to fill the vacant duties, all the newbies or reserves could sign for a duty still based on seniority, but eventually there would be a full resign,
Just as a thought when was you're last resign, and I can't understand that with 30yrs you couldn't get a permanent walk, there must be some really senior people in you're office!

Re: WHAT WOULD YOU REPLACE SELECTION BY SENIORTY WITH
i'd like to see seniority replaced by a league table based on points accrued from some key personel performance indicators.
example:
starting before your time 5 points
working through your break 5 points
brown nosing gaffer 7 points
use your own car 10 points
Managers relative 20 points
mouthy barrack room lawyer -10 points ect
thus ensuring that people who deserve it get the best positions
simples

That would be a red rag to a bull to Senior & Middle Management though - just shows how much mistrust and poor IR there is .westlondonpostie wrote:What if it was done by the Union?norbert wrote:RM would try and fiddle that - it's been done in FLF " morale boosting draws " - A Dim Dum "won" a car & a shifty unpopular ex - manager's non - union son "won" a car .
