Actually,it's probably best to be upfront and inform your manager what has happened.piranha wrote:If the matter isn't work related I would say its none of their business
The reason i say this,is although it's not in works time, you are supposed to conduct
yourself appropriately, because even out of hours you're deemed to be representing
Royal Mail.(i'm sure it says something along those lines in your contract aswell)
We had a guy in our D.O. who had to appear in court, and it ended up in the paper,
saying he worked for RM.
When this is the first everyone hears of it,even your colleagues can be funny with you.

Re: do u have to tell DOM regarding police
Wasn't there a problem a few years back ? , RM had been shafted on C4's " Despatches " and it went into mass panic mode and started sacking TC's etc left , right & centre , asking people had started a few years back for passports etc .robd wrote:Actually,it's probably best to be upfront and inform your manager what has happened.piranha wrote:If the matter isn't work related I would say its none of their business

I think one guy had been up front with RM and it had nothing to do with work but they still sacked him . The Union HQ pulled them up as they'd not followed CofC procedure .
I think RM can have people for bringing them into disrepute . There was the infamous Doherty Brothers case in London that RM lost in a ET and had to pay out £65,000 or more as they'd botched it , all the way through .

Re: do u have to tell DOM regarding police
they've got you over a barrel , and there will be people that'll milk it for all it's worth in the media to discredit public sector workers . Obviously private sector workers never break the law and druggie shoplifters and burglars up before the beak won't warrant a mention but that's how it goes .graffi wrote:read the conduct code its in there ,,, no12 criminal acts outside employment

Sadly the Press don't see it that way. If you think that there's any possibility of it ending up in the Papers. You really need to tell your DOM, because otherwise you will get into a lot of trouble. If on the other hand, it's something very minor, that the Press wouldn't be interested in. Then I doubt it'll matter.pickaname wrote:I DO NOT represent Royal Mail in ANY CAPACITY WHATSOEVER outside of work hours.robd wrote:

Remember, the Press are just looking for excuses to portray Posties in a bad light. Even if it's something that had nothing to do with work, and you weren't in Uniform. Here are a few examples:
http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... an+charged" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Although in this case, it was a heinous crime. It had nothing to do with Royal Mail, or being a Postie.
http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... arged+with" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Another terrible case, but again. Nothing to do with being a Postie. Despite the fact that he posted some of the suspicious packages. He could just as easily have done it as a normal member of the Public.
http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... arged+with" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This one's a much less seious case. But guess what?
Nothing to do with being a Postie.
And that's just the most recent 3. There's loads of them in the News Section, if you want to look them up. It's better to be safe than sorry. Especially when it comes to the Conduct Code!

It's all been done before in the 80's & 90's , the drip effect , private = good , public = bad , BT workers , Utilities , Railwaymen by pro - privatization Tory papers . Hellmail tried that tactic too .andy2007 wrote:Sadly the Press don't see it that way. If you think that there's any possibility of it ending up in the Papers. We'd one lad who'd been a printers laborer , back breaking , unrelenting hard work , the brother was a bad 'un etc and the Council and the Police wanted eviction for breaking a ABSO .
The poxy local rag always go to town on sink estates , there was a rent a mob protest which ended up on the front page .
A SM took him to one side - " What's all this about your mother being the only one without a criminal record , I want your notice on Thursday or I'll have to sack you on Friday " .
That was pretty fair old school RM & it kept Area off his back . The resident village idiot " Rocket Man " framing the cutting and presenting it to " ABSO " was out of order though .

Sadly, it's RM and the Press you're having to deal with. And neither have a particularly good record, when it comes to that.rowdogg wrote:thanx for the replies guys, its only minor really and No charges have been brought so far so maybe i'll wait and see what develops till i mention it....what happened to innocent until proven guilty!

RM don't mind covering for their managers though - same story , same chapter , same double standards as ever .andy2007 wrote:Sadly, it's RM and the Press you're having to deal with.
