Crozier says post strike defies modernisation

Adam Crozier, the chief executive of Royal Mail, has condemned strike action planned for today as one union’s attempt to derail crucial modernisation plans.

As the row over jobs, pay and services escalates, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said more than 12,000 members would walk out for 24 hours, threatening the worst disruption to deliveries for years.

Workers taking part will include those based in London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Darlington, Stoke-on-Trent, Plymouth, Norfolk and Essex.

Today’s action is the latest in a series of strikes in recent weeks.

In a letter to The Times Mr Crozier yesterday accused the union of using the threat of escalating strike action to halt the modernisation of the mail business, which is dealing with a 10 per cent decline in UK volumes.

Mr Crozier claimed the union was issuing instructions to branch representatives telling them not to co-operate with Royal Mail over the introduction of new equipment and changes in working practices, despite their public statements to the contrary.

Specific examples of the union’s resistance to modernisation, Mr Crozier said, include some employees “not working all the hours for which people are paid”.

He pointed to a “refusal to work to revised delivery routes generated by computer aided planning” and a “refusal to accept the use of more part-time workers in delivery to enable us to be more flexible and match the workload”.

CWU was last night unavailable for comment. In a statement posted on the union’s website yesterday, Dave Ward, the deputy general secretary, said: “This round of cuts is arbitrary and illogical. Without new machinery or improvements in deliveries and industrial relations, postal services will be drastically hit. There’s nothing modern in cutting jobs and hours and imposing a pay freeze.”

The union claims that Royal Mail bosses have abandoned the final phase of a deal which ended a national strike in 2007 and is warning that without progress the dispute will turn into a national strike.

Computer aided planning 7 weeks ago we were clearing our office every day, they pushed ahead with they're changes and took executive action and implemented the revision, now we have walks cutting off at 10.30 just so they can get out and complete they're delivery, even then some walks are bring back 2-3 auto levels of work a day, and I'm talking about well known streets such as Regent St and Harley st in Westminster.
Time to come out of you're Ivory Tower :cfo and see what you're greed is doing to a service that has been delivering the goods since 1660 :cfo

Thats is total rubbish, we have to do that in our office, of course if there is no work to do, then you can't do any. We have lapsing here as well, so I'd like him to come and visit us, and see for himself, I have made that offer to him before, but of course he won't come down.

We've had ours done a few months ago, we still have a number of walks that CAN'T be done in the time, even the runners can't do them, we've had duties put back in, but we still have deliveries cutting off, or booking a shed load of OT, because the duties can't be done, and that is with people
not taking breaks, taking their own cars, and of course running around. Our sick leave is on the up, we have people off with depression and stress.

If thats what he wants as a flexible and hard working staff, then he's got it, but would any of us piss on him if he was on fire, I very much doubt it, as RM is not a nice place to go to every day, and he must take the blame for that. You can't keep cutting hours out of the office, even the managers have said, there isn't any more hours to cut.

After all, it's only a job!

CROZIER is right here because the walks are f@cked up we have people finishing up to 1.5hrs before time and others cutting off or working O/T. That's what the new walks have given us. THE MANAGER STILL SAYS IT'S WORKING OK....................W@NKER

I am meeting customers day in day out, they ain't happy with the service they are getting and are concerned that the job cuts mean that they will be getting they're post much later in future, just yesterday a solicitors said that they needed to have they're post as soon as possible so they are able to reply by post that same day, Royal Mails solution is that they can get an early delivery but will charge them £10 a day for the privelage and even that means that they will only get they're post that is available at 8am.
Do you think it's good business sense or in the interests of customer service that Postmen and women are having to return to they're office with half a van or delivery bags full of work as they do not have enough time to complete the delivery or that they are told to cut off at 11am and leave trays of letters and bags of packets behind just so Management can say that at least customers had a delivery? well that is happening in my Office.

If you are in management, you will know that this strike is not about money but about the slashing of jobs and un-realistic 318's,
Go on, give you're Office area next time, I dare say there may be a few postmen from you're Office who will be able to give you a good debate.

We do have jobs and it's the future of those jobs we are striking for, it won't belong before Adam Dozy and his cronies will start slashing the managements jobs and then my friend you will be on you're own
