Large parts of Scotland to be hit by postal strike

STRIKE action by postal workers across the east coast of Scotland will cause widespread disruption over the weekend.
Thousands of postal workers are taking part in a 24-hour nationwide strike action on Friday, the latest in a worsening row over jobs, pay and services.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said more than 12,000 of its members would walk out.

Workers at the Royal Mail's distribution centre in Edinburgh will take part, and deliveries across the capital will be affected. Action is also taking place in Alloa, Anstruther, Bathgate, Bo'ness, Cowdenbeath, Dalkeith, Dunfermline, Grangemouth and Kinross.

The CWU has accused Royal Mail of cutting the pay and jobs of postal workers without agreement, and of reducing services.

Dave Ward, the union's deputy general secretary, said: "We have renewed our offer of a three-month no-strike deal in return for meaningful talks.

"The current cuts, bullying managers and ever-increasing workloads on a shrinking workforce cannot continue. Pressure and stress is at breaking point for postal workers."

Royal Mail condemned the plan and said that more than 90 per cent of staff would still be delivering the mail.
