Re: dog bite
Have you been given a copy of the ERICA (Accident Form) Report to sign?
If not, get on the Phone to your DO fast, and get it sorted out. You have to check that the details are correct, and sign it, to confirm that it's correct. Otherwise, the report isn't valid.

Noted that it is your 1st posting deggyg so welcome to RMC. As to your query with regards to compensation. Without wishing to sound irate, your manager is telling you a pure pack of lies, and to throw it back in their face when you next see them, ask them to specifically look at their copy of the Dealing with Dog Attacks - Good Practice Guide and in particular a copy of the "Dog Attack Compensation Claim Form" is at Section 5.
Basically the scheme is intended to cushion employees who are off sick as a result of a dog attack against the effect of reduced earnings during sick leave.
Better still and for a clearer understanding view my posting at http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... me#p130236" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: dog bite
Don't know if this is the right place, being a Chat virgin, but here goes: Was attacked by a dog, history of the dog was unknown to me, doing "cut offs".
I had done this area 2 - 3 times before, with no sight/sound of a dog. No bite, but 3rd attack/lunge caused tear to Adductor Muscle/groin strain. No sick time taken, and no Dog Warning sign was on the frame/Walk log empty and no verbal/written warning was issued to me by Management before leaving office.
Was retrospectively accepted by DWP as Injury at Work and recorded - reluctantly - by manager on offices PC.( Originally told, "no bite/no injury".)
Since then, and 3 more similar attacks in 10mths, I've taken sick leave for at least 2-3 weeks, my first time in a year after another attack/strain last week.
Was asked to attend work 4 days after attack for a "chat", not knowing Regional Manager would be attending. After a few minutes, was asked/told? to start on light duties "now." Replied that GP had final say, who refused to sign their letter for early return, to my delight...
Anti-inflammatories and painkillers negate driving, so was asked to do paperwork from home. Again, GP's refusal was correct decision.
Was told last week, original attack dog owner admits fault, on Benefits, no insurance. Would I take £1 per week compo? Lol....
So, considering taking case against RM managers and their lack of H+S adherence etc. Waiting to hear from CWU solicitors this week.
BUT...Don't wanna drop usual rounds posties in it, if management say warnings/logs was their responsibility etc. May twist it this way...
Any help advice appreciated.

Re: dog bite
No the postie is only responsible for alerting the manager of any potential H&S problems. The manager is responsible for policy implementation which includes updating the walk log, and frame. Brother Magrew will hopefully confirm this as he has extensive H&S knowledge, but I also believe Management have a responsibility to Risk Asses each and every walk on a regular basis.

Re: dog bite
Still on topic with this .............. If a dog is running at you are you allowed to kick it ??
Have beentold to use my pouch on bigger dogs
but what about smaller ones .
Today this yorkie mutt was chasing after me in its garden . Kept coming and running around me . Kept lunging as if to bite . Decided if it came within kicking distance it was gonna be kicked like a rugby ball .
Need your thoughts . In the end I acted as if i was gonna go for it and it ran away

You could try:
POLICY PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES part of RM's Policy on Dealing with Dog Attacks
3.5 All reported attacks or incidents of menacing will be entered on on local "Hazard Card", "Walk Log" and in the "Dog Attack Incident Sheet", or equivalent, for the information of other Postmen or Postwomen.
3.11 In all cases where sick leave of 7 days or more is incurred, the victim will be advised of the existence of the Dog Compensation Scheme arrangements.
See your safety rep and ask him or her for a look at the Dealing with Dog Attacks Good Practice Guide which also contains the Royal Mail Policy on Dealing with Dog Attacks.

Re: dog bite
Don't kick the dog, if the dog is out the next time don't go in, return the mail to your DO and report it to your DOM, if you go kicking the dog you could find yourself in more trouble from the owner/the press/the RSPCA (there is a story about a postman kicking a dog who ended up in court over it).calpsy wrote:Still on topic with this .............. Re: dog bite
That's right. It's the same situation if someone tries to steal your car, break into your Home, or whatever. If you attack, you get prosecuted. It's stupid, but it's the law. Your best bet, is to escape if you can.disgruntledpostie1 wrote:Don't kick the dog, if the dog is out the next time don't go in, return the mail to your DO and report it to your DOM, if you go kicking the dog you could find yourself in more trouble from the owner/the press/the RSPCA (there is a story about a postman kicking a dog who ended up in court over it).calpsy wrote:Still on topic with this .............. Re: dog bite
TO Brothermagrew: This info has been passed onto the solicitor, Thanks, no ansa yet. They may be reluctant to take it up, after failure with dog owner. Cud be new solicitor/new claim etc.
Seeing GP tomorrow to extend sick leave, still in pain. Haven't been offered Dog Attack compo sheme, but enquiries revealed you have to complete this in the Mangers office - surprise, surprise - on their Intranet. Also, I don't recall signing a copy of the Accident Report they put on the PC, but I was in pain etc.
SO...I'll have to do this asap as I believe this an important aspect of ensuring the ERICA system and record keeping are all tickityboo...
Have to keep an eye on sickness, though I understood that "Accidents/injuries at Work" may not count against me, but also then told "not in every case" by the very friendly Regional Manager, which I took as poorly veiled threat of Stage Warnings
Which is it? As the Temptations sang, "Ball of confusion."!!!!
Just wanna be pain free, back in work on rehab/lite duties, and poss compo if blame is proven.
Not much to ask for 10 months of BS + 4 attacks...is it?

Re: dog bite
The dog in question was walking about OUTSIDE its garden with the gate obviously left open . The little fker started on me barking snarling and lunging at be but wouldnt bite as I kept turning to face it . Thing is ...... if its outside its garden in public then what the hell do you do if it does bite you and keep on chasing after you ??? Do you act like an idiot and let it ??? no course not ......... you WOULD have to do something to it . I have a dog ......... LARGE alsation ......... but i always make sure if its out then the property is secure . Some owners just dont have a clue .
