NOT a single letter was delivered in Clevedon on Saturday when almost every branch worker took part in a day's walk-out.

Every postal worker but one from the town joined in a 24-hour strike in a dispute over modernisation plans by Royal Mail.

While in Yatton, three quarters of the branch's 20 staff took part in the Communication and Workers Union (CWU) organised action.

Bristol CWU branch secretary David Wilshire said: "What we are trying to achieve here is maintain the postal service.

"Workers know further job cuts and higher work loads will be detrimental to the service, so they want to take a stand."

A Royal Mail spokesman defended modernisation plans for the business and added: "As mail volumes fall we need to make changes and become more efficient right across the UK.

"Industrial action will not modernise Royal Mail - it will simply disrupt the service to which customers are entitled.

THE postal service in Congresbury and Yatton was severely disrupted on Saturday when workers took part in a 24-hour walk-out.

About three quarters of the 20 staff at Yatton's Royal Mail branch joined in the strike in a dispute over modernisation plans.

Postal workers in Clevedon also took part in the industrial action, organised by the Communication and Workers Union (CWU).

Bristol CWU branch secretary David Wilshire said: "What we are trying to achieve here is maintaining the postal service.

"We know modernisation means job cuts and work loads. We want a proper say in the plans and are determined to make a stand."

Workers at Weston's branch moved a step closer to taking strike action when they agreed to a ballot last week, although no date has been set for the vote.

Same old drivel. When are they going to address the situation properly, instead of simply spouting the same propaganda, all the time?

They're right that Strikes won't modernise the Business. But if we don't Strike, they'll cause irreprable damage to the service we provide. Our terms and conditions, and the Customers who rely on the Postal Service. Are they really deluded enough to think that someone else could step in, if we are no longer able to provide that service?
