There is always the option of Tuesday-Saturday working especially given that Saturday's workload is getting heavier and not lighter!
... and then, with Monday and Tuesday being the quietest days of the week, you could suggest working Wednesday to Sunday.

5 day weeks?

Post by andy2007 »

If we did go to a 5 day week (which I doubt). Then which day would YOU suggest we lost?
If we lost the Saturday delivery, then the majority of people, would NEVER be in when a Parcel arrives. Unless of course, they booked the day off. So if we didn't loose the Saturday, then surely it would make sense to loose the Monday instead.

The problem, would be with the Business Customers. They would want the Monday delivery to stay, as they will want the Mail that was posted over the weekend, to arrive ASAP. This is why I don;t believe that we will see a 5 day week for Deliveries.

Nope, I cant see it either.

But frankly I couldnt give a toss if the customer isnt happy about not being in monday - friday to accept parcels, if they order them then they should make arrangements to be in, or send it to the local post office for 50p, or collect from DO before they start work if item is dispatched.

Plus it doesn't seem to affect the 'competition', they don't deliver on Saturdays (at least over here) so how do their parcels get delivered whenever people aren't there (I forgot, they just chuck them at doors or around the back just to get rid of them).

Interesting - could RM then offer two separate services from DOs - Domestic deliveries on Tuesday to Saturdays and a Business service Monday to Friday :hmmmm

How would they staff it?
It would be a lot better for everyone to be on a 5 day week. But it would be a logistical nightmare.

I dont think it would be, in fact i think it would be pretty straight-forward, for the delivery aspect anyway.

Cull some of the dead wood, straight 8 hour shift every day for everyone 6am-2pm, just need to take the saturday mail and spread it between mon and tues mail when its lighter, making mon and tues heavyish like the rest of the week, small price to pay for a full weekend off every week.

Will we get a chance to vote on that?? Will we hell.

Only bad news when you work at RM, never something good.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I was refering to TBT's suggestion of 2 seperate duties: Mon - Fri for Business recipients. Tues - Sat for domestic recipients. That's what I thought would be a logistical nightmare.

I guess they would have to determine which are the business deliveries and which are the domestic and rejig the deliveries to cope. However, although the 2 days off would be a bonus I myself would fight any reduction in the USO even if I benefit from it.

The chances of getting a monday to friday delivery are very slim indeed. As Royal Mail do not want to agree a shorter working week that would mean 5 x 8. 18 days which Royal Mail believe is too long for the reduction in prep and thats why they are proposing more part timers. Indeed all those with attendances of less than 5 day weeks ie 4 day weeks and 9 day fortnights are have to proposals to revert them back to five day weeks.

I believe it is more likely that Royal Mail will move to bringing back 6 day weeks then it is like that they will agree a monday to friday attendance.

You see that is the type of ruthless employer that Royal Mail are and thats why we are in the dispute we are. Dont think they wont do it because they will sell it as a way to save full time jobs. Especially as Network 2009 will bring with it by the differnt flow of the network longer saturdays in delivery offices and mail centes.

Sad!! Is that what you call chucking your workmates on the scrap heap so you can have a weekend off? 16+% of the delivery staff on the dole with no skills in a recession? Tens of thousands with no means to support their families. Sad?
Sadly, there are a lot of selfish people out there. Don't take him on. RM aren't likley to change to 5 day weeks, because of the USO anyway.

I had the same problem, back when I was on an SEC (Special Event Contract). There were people who were arguing at Union Meetings. With me, and others like me, present. Who were demanding that we should have our Contracts terminated, so that they could have more overtime! Thankfully, people like that are invariably in the minority. Which is why I still have a job. But it just goes to show, just how selfish and nasty, some people are! :mad :arrrghhh

If they expect parcels they should live at one of those addresses out in the country where the doors don't have locks or letter boxes - you just open the door and put letters and parcels on the kitchen table, and pour yourself a nice cup of coffee if it's a quiet day.
